If there's one place on the Albanian Riviera that has stolen our hearts with its expanse, natural beauty, and the sense of authenticity it still retains, it's Playa de Borsh. Known as the longest beach in Albania, it stretches for an impressive seven kilometers, offering a canvas of smooth pebbles and sand that blends with the mesmerizing turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea. Located in southern Albania, in the Vlora region, Borsh is a true treasure that, while increasingly discovered, maintains a rustic charm and a tranquility hard to find in other more crowded destinations.

When we think of Vlora beaches, images of hidden coves and crystal-clear waters often come to mind, and Borsh fits that description perfectly, but with the added bonus of its vastness. It's a place where one can walk for hours, finding both vibrant areas with services and secluded corners where the only sound is the gentle breaking of waves. For us, it's a destination that perfectly combines the possibility of relaxing under the sun with exploring a pristine natural environment and a rich culture.

How to Get to Playa de Borsh

Getting to Playa de Borsh is part of the adventure and, for many, one of the most memorable experiences of the trip. The most common and scenic way to access Borsh is by car, traveling along the famous Albanian Riviera. If we come from the north, for example from Tirana or the city of Vlora, we will take the SH8, a coastal road that gifts us impressive views of the Ionian Sea and the mountains that plunge into it. This journey, although sometimes winding, is spectacular and allows us to admire the untamed beauty of the Vlora beaches and their surroundings. From the capital Vlora, the trip can take between 1.5 and 2 hours, depending on traffic and the stops we make to photograph the landscape.

If our base is further south, like in Saranda, the journey is equally picturesque and somewhat shorter, approximately 1 hour. The road will take us through small coastal villages and Mediterranean landscapes that invite exploration. It's important to remember that, although the main roads are in good condition, some detours to smaller coves or accommodations may be on less paved roads, so a vehicle with good ground clearance is always an advantage.

For those who prefer public transport, there are bus ('furgon') lines that connect Borsh with cities like Vlora, Saranda, and, in high season, even Tirana. These buses are usually economical and offer a good opportunity to mingle with the locals. However, the schedules can be less flexible and the journeys longer. Our recommendation is to rent a car if we want to explore the area at our own pace and enjoy the freedom to stop wherever we want. Parking in Borsh is generally easy to find, with designated areas near the main beach accesses and at accommodations, some even offer free parking for their guests.

The Sand and Water

The particularity of Playa de Borsh lies in its composition: it's not a typical fine-sand beach, but a charming mix of small polished pebbles and coarser sand. We would say its `tipo_arena` is definitely 'mixed' and its `tipo_suelo` also 'mixed'. This characteristic is what contributes to the astonishing clarity of its waters. With no fine sand to be stirred up by the wave movement, the Ionian Sea here is of an intense turquoise color and a transparency that invites immediate immersion. It's a real pleasure to be able to see the seabed even at several meters depth, making it an excellent spot for snorkeling, even without specialized equipment.

The water in Borsh is, in general, quite calm, especially on windless days, making it very safe for swimming. The entry into the sea is usually gentle, with a gradual slope, although it can vary slightly along its seven kilometers. The pebbles on the shore can be a bit uncomfortable for bare feet at first, but we found that flip-flops or water shoes solve this minor inconvenience and allow full enjoyment of the experience. Once in the water, the sensation is one of pure freshness and cleanliness, a true balm for body and mind under the Albanian sun.

For us, the combination of pebbles and sand creates a unique and very photogenic landscape. The sunlight reflects differently on the small stones, creating glimmers and textures that change throughout the day. And the water temperature, especially in the summer months, is very pleasant, ideal for spending long hours enjoying a refreshing swim. It is, without a doubt, one of the most distinctive and attractive characteristics of this Vlora beach, differentiating it from many others in the region and the rest of the Albanian beaches.
