If there is one place on the Albanian Riviera that embodies the essence of a 'hidden paradise', that is, without a doubt, Playa de Gjipe. We are faced with one of those natural wonders that, despite its growing popularity, has managed to maintain an aura of virginity and authenticity. Strategically located between the popular destinations of Dhermi and Himara, in the Vlora region, this beach is much more than a simple stretch of sand and pebbles; it is a canvas where nature has masterfully painted dramatic cliffs, an imposing canyon, and waters so incredibly turquoise they defy imagination. It is certainly one of the most spectacular beaches in Albania and a must-visit for any traveler looking for more than just sun and sand.

Our experience at Gjipe was transformative. From the moment we began the descent to the beach, the feeling of being about to discover something special came over us. The journey to it is, in itself, an adventure that prepares the spirit for the final reward. Playa de Gjipe is not one of those beaches you reach effortlessly, and precisely that challenge is part of its charm. It is a place where time seems to stand still, where the sound of the waves and the song of birds are the only soundtrack, and where one can truly reconnect with nature. For us, it has become one of the beaches in Vlora that we most recommend, a sanctuary of peace and unparalleled beauty.

How to Get to Playa de Gjipe

Getting to Playa de Gjipe is part of the adventure and what keeps it relatively wild. There are two main ways to access this paradise, and both offer very different experiences.

By Car and on Foot

The most common option is to drive to a designated parking area at the top of the Gjipe canyon. This parking usually has a symbolic cost and is the starting point for the hike. From there, the trail descends along a fairly steep and rocky dirt path. The hike lasts approximately 20 to 30 minutes, depending on pace and stops to admire the views. We strongly recommend wearing comfortable and suitable footwear, such as sneakers or trekking sandals, as the terrain can be slippery in some sections. The views during the descent are spectacular, offering panoramas of the Ionian Sea and the impressive canyon that opens up as one approaches the beach. This access is what allows us to feel like explorers, discovering the beach step by step.

By Boat

For those who prefer to avoid the hike or want a different experience, Playa de Gjipe is accessible by boat. You can find water taxis or organized excursions from the nearby beaches of Jale or Himara. This option is ideal for families with young children or people with reduced mobility, although it should be considered that disembarkation is directly on the shore. Boat tours often offer the chance to explore small sea caves and hidden coves along the coast, adding an extra bit of adventure to the visit. For us, arriving by boat offers a unique perspective of the majestic canyon and the cliffs that protect the beach.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Gjipe is known for its particular combination of sand and pebbles. We classify its sand type as 'mixed' and its ground type also as 'mixed', as we find a mix of small pebbles polished by the sea and areas of finer sand, especially near the shore and in some sections. This characteristic gives it a very particular feel and makes the water incredibly clear, as sediments are not easily stirred up. We advise bringing water shoes if you are not used to walking on pebbles, for greater comfort.

But what really captivated us about Gjipe was the water. The waters of the Ionian Sea here are of an intense, almost unreal turquoise color, and their clarity is astonishing. We can see the seabed with perfect clarity even several meters deep. The temperature is pleasant during the summer months, inviting long swims and enjoying the coolness of the sea. The calmness of its waters, protected by the cliffs, makes it an excellent place for swimming and relaxing, feeling the caress of the sun and the sea breeze. It is, without a doubt, one of the main reasons we consider it one of the best beaches in Albania.

Services and Facilities

Despite its wild nature and somewhat complicated access, Playa de Gjipe offers some basic services during the high season, generally from June to September. This allows us to enjoy comfort without losing the essence of a pristine place.

Chiringuitos and Dining

In the summer months, some temporary and rustic chiringuitos are usually set up directly on the beach. These establishments offer cold drinks, snacks, and sometimes simple food options like sandwiches or salads. It's the perfect place to have a refreshment after a swim or to replenish energy. The offering is basic, but sufficient to spend the day without worrying about bringing a loaded cooler. We always like to support these small local businesses that make it possible to enjoy the beach with certain comforts.

Umbrellas and Sunbeds

It is also possible to rent umbrellas and sunbeds on the beach during the high season. This is very convenient, especially because the sun in Albania can be intense. As it is not a beach with large constructions, these facilities integrate quite naturally into the environment, allowing us to enjoy shade and comfort without clashing with the landscape. We recommend arriving early if we want to secure a good spot, especially in August.
