How to Get to Playa de Gornja Vala

Getting to Playa de Gornja Vala is an exciting part of the adventure, as the journey along the Dalmatian coast is a spectacle in itself. The most common way to arrive for most international travelers is to fly into Split (SPU) or Dubrovnik (DBV) airports. Both airports are well connected to major European cities and offer ground transportation options to reach Gradac, where our beach is located.

From Split

If we land in Split, we have several options. We can rent a car, which gives us maximum flexibility to explore the Makarska Riviera at our own pace. The drive from Split to Gradac takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic, and takes us along a picturesque coastal road with spectacular views. Alternatively, we can take a direct bus from Split's main bus station, which offers regular connections to Gradac. The buses are comfortable and an economical option, allowing us to enjoy the scenery without worrying about driving. The distance is about 100 kilometers.

From Dubrovnik

From Dubrovnik, the journey is a bit longer, approximately 2 to 2.5 hours by car or bus, covering about 120 kilometers. The route is also incredibly scenic, passing through small coastal towns and offering panoramas of the Adriatic. As with Split, renting a car is an excellent option, but buses are also frequent and reliable. It is important to consider that, depending on the route, we might briefly cross the border into Bosnia and Herzegovina (Neum Corridor), so it is essential to carry our valid passports or identity documents.

Parking in Gradac

Once in Gradac, finding parking near Playa de Gornja Vala is relatively straightforward, although it can be more challenging during the peak summer season (July and August). There are several paid parking lots along the coast and on the streets adjacent to the beach. We always recommend arriving early in the morning if we are traveling by car, especially during the busiest months, to secure a good spot. Many accommodations in Gradac also offer parking for their guests, which is a plus if we decide to stay in the area.

The Sand and Water

The most distinctive feature of Playa de Gornja Vala is its composition. Unlike the sandy beaches found in other parts of the world, here we find a surface of smooth, white pebbles. These pebbles, polished by the waves over millennia, vary in size, generally being small and round, which makes them surprisingly comfortable for walking and lying on. For those not accustomed to pebble beaches, we might suggest using water shoes or aqua socks, especially for children, for greater comfort when entering and exiting the sea.

The color of the pebbles, combined with the depth and purity of the Adriatic, contributes to the astonishing transparency of the water. As we approach the shore, we will see how the water transforms from a crystal blue in the shallow area to a deep turquoise and sapphire as we go further in. The visibility is exceptional, making Playa de Gornja Vala an ideal spot for snorkeling. We could spend hours observing small fish, sea urchins, and other marine creatures in their natural habitat.

The water quality is consistently high, a fact corroborated by the presence of the Blue Flag, a distinction that certifies environmental excellence and sustainable beach management. The currents are usually gentle, and the entry into the sea is gradual, making it very safe for swimmers of all ages, including the youngest. During the summer months, the water temperature is pleasantly warm, ranging between 22°C and 26°C, perfect for a refreshing swim under the Croatian sun. It is this combination of smooth pebbles, pristine waters, and a tranquil atmosphere that makes us return again and again to this wonderful Split-Dalmatia beach.
