How to Get to Playa de Balanegra

Getting to Playa de Balanegra is relatively straightforward, which adds to its appeal, especially for those traveling by car. The municipality of Balanegra is located on the coast of the Poniente Almeriense, about 50 kilometers west of the capital, Almería.

By Car

The most comfortable way to access this beach is undoubtedly by private car.

• From Almería city: We must take the A-7 motorway towards Málaga and exit at junction 414 towards Balanegra/Adra. Once on the local road, AL-9003, we follow the signs that will lead us directly to the town and, consequently, to the beach. The journey usually takes about 40-50 minutes, depending on traffic.
• From Málaga/Granada: If coming from the west, we take the A-7 towards Almería and use the same exit 414.

The beach has several parking areas along its promenade and adjacent streets, making it easy to find a place to park, even in high season, although we always recommend arriving early to secure the best spots.

By Public Transport

Although the car is the preferred option, it is also possible to arrive by bus. There are regular lines connecting Almería city with Balanegra, although the frequency may be limited, especially outside the summer season. It is advisable to check the schedules of local transport companies (such as ALSA) in advance to plan the trip. Once in the town, the beach is a short walk from the main stop.

The Sand and Water

One of the aspects that most caught our attention about Playa de Balanegra is its unique combination of sand and pebbles, which gives it a distinctive character among Almería's beaches.

The Sand

The sand at Playa de Balanegra is dark in tone, a common feature in many volcanic beaches or those with mineral-rich sediments on the Almería coast. It is not the typical fine, golden sand, but a mixed sand that alternates with small pebbles or stones. This composition has its advantages:

• Less sticky: Being not so fine, the sand doesn't stick as much to the body or towels, making cleanup easier at the end of the day.
• Pleasant texture: Although not the softest sand, walking along the shore is comfortable and the sensation underfoot is peculiar and pleasant.
• Water clarity: The presence of pebbles helps keep the seabed more stable and the water clearer, as there are fewer suspended particles.

The Water

The waters of Playa de Balanegra are, in general, very calm and crystal clear, a characteristic we greatly value. Being protected from stronger currents, the entry into the sea is gentle and gradual, making it ideal for swimming, even for the little ones.

• Temperature: During the summer months, the water temperature is very pleasant, inviting long dips and enjoying the sea without rush.
• Color: The water color varies between blue and green tones, reflecting the cleanliness and quality bestowed by the Blue Flag. It's a pleasure to immerse yourself in these waters and observe marine life, even if it's not a top-tier diving destination.
• Waves: The waves are usually gentle or non-existent, making it a perfect beach for swimming, floating, and relaxing without worrying about the strength of the surf.

Services and Facilities

Playa de Balanegra stands out for offering excellent service infrastructure, ensuring a comfortable and worry-free stay for all its visitors. We made sure everything needed was at hand, and the truth is the municipality has done a great job.

Among the services and facilities we can find, we highlight:

• Showers and Foot Washers: Throughout the promenade, there are points with showers and foot washers so we can rinse off the sand and salt before heading home.
• Restrooms/WC: Public toilets are available, maintained in good, clean condition, a detail that is always appreciated.
• Lifeguard Service: During the high season, the beach has lifeguard and surveillance service, which gives us great peace of mind, especially if we're with children. There are watchtowers and qualified personnel.
