When we think of Alonissos beaches, images of turquoise waters and lush vegetation often come to mind. Kokkinokastro more than meets these expectations, but adds a geological element that sets it apart from others. Its combination of polished pebbles, coarse sand, and those reddish rock formations, coupled with the clarity of its waters, makes it an unmissable destination for those seeking natural beauty, tranquility, and a touch of history. How to Get to Playa de Kokkinokastro

Getting to Playa de Kokkinokastro is part of the adventure and, fortunately, quite simple. Alonissos is a small island, which makes exploration easy. The beach is located on the east coast of the island, about 7 kilometers north of Patitiri, the main port and capital of the island. From Patitiri, we have several options to reach this reddish paradise.

By Car or Motorbike

The most comfortable and flexible way to get there is by renting a car or motorbike. The road leading to Kokkinokastro is well-signposted and in good condition, although the last stretches can be a bit narrower and winding, typical of Greek islands. The journey from Patitiri takes approximately 15-20 minutes. Upon arrival, you'll find an improvised and free parking area, right next to the beach or nearby, which is a great advantage. It allows us to bring all our beach gear without worry and enjoy the day at our own pace.

By Local Bus

During the high season, Alonissos has a local bus service connecting Patitiri with some of the main beaches and villages. Although the bus doesn't go directly to the sand of Kokkinokastro, it can drop you off on the nearby main road, from where you'd have to walk a short distance. However, for the Alonissos beach of Kokkinokastro, a car or motorbike is usually the preferred option for its comfort and direct access.

By Taxi

Another alternative, especially if we don't want to drive or are a small group, is to take a taxi from Patitiri. Taxis in Alonissos are reliable and can take us directly to the beach. It's a more expensive option, but ideal for those seeking comfort and not wanting to worry about parking or directions. It's always advisable to agree on the price with the driver before starting the journey.

On Foot (for Adventurers)

For hiking and nature lovers, it's possible to reach Kokkinokastro on foot from Patitiri or from the charming village of Palio Horio (the old capital). There are several hiking trails connecting different points on the island, and some of them pass near the beach. It's an option that requires good physical condition, proper footwear, and sun protection, but rewards us with spectacular views and the opportunity to fully immerse ourselves in the Alonissos landscape. However, we wouldn't recommend it for those looking for easy and quick access with beach gear.

The Sand and Water

When we step onto Playa de Kokkinokastro, the first thing we notice is the particularity of its ground. It's not a typical fine-sand beach, but a fascinating mix of polished pebbles of different sizes and shades, combined with coarse, dark-colored sand. This peculiarity of the terrain gives it a rustic and natural charm that we love. The pebbles, shaped by the waves over the centuries, are pleasant to the touch and, although not as soft as fine sand, are comfortable to walk on, especially with water shoes. The dark color of the sand and pebbles contrasts wonderfully with the intense blue of the sea, creating a visual spectacle that is a feast for the eyes.

But if the ground is interesting, the water at Kokkinokastro is simply spectacular. We are faced with crystal-clear waters of astonishing transparency, allowing us to see the seabed with exceptional clarity. The shades range from a turquoise blue at the shore to a deeper sapphire blue as we go further out. The purity of the water is such that it invites you to dive in immediately and explore its depths. The temperature is usually very pleasant during the summer months, refreshing but not cold, perfect for a long swim.

A Snorkeling Paradise

Precisely because of the clarity of its waters and the presence of underwater rock formations, Playa de Kokkinokastro is an exceptional place for snorkeling. We highly recommend bringing a mask and snorkel, because beneath the surface awaits a vibrant world of marine life. You can observe small colorful fish, starfish, and, if you're lucky, even an octopus hiding among the rocks. It's an immersive experience that connects us directly with the natural richness of the Aegean Sea and adds an extra touch of adventure to our beach day.
