How to Get to Playa de Portizuelo

Getting to Playa de Portizuelo is part of the adventure and rewards us with spectacular views. The beach is located in the council of Valdés, very close to the picturesque town of Luarca, known as 'La Villa Blanca de la Costa Verde' (The White Villa of the Green Coast).

Directions and Access

To get there, we generally take the A-8 (Autovía del Cantábrico) and turn off towards Luarca. Once in the vicinity of Luarca, we follow the signs to the village of Querúas or to Playa de Portizuelo itself. Signage is common, though sometimes a bit discreet, guiding us along local roads. The final access to the beach is usually via a path or track leading to a designated parking area, often free, though it can fill up in high season. From the parking lot, a path or stairs will lead us directly to the sand. It's important to consider that the descent can be a bit steep in some sections, so we recommend wearing comfortable and appropriate footwear. The strategic location of this Valdés beach allows us to enjoy an idyllic rural and coastal setting.

We are faced with a beach of mixed sand type, meaning it's not exclusively fine sand. This combination gives it a wilder, more natural look and invites us to walk barefoot with a different sensation underfoot. The ground type is clearly mixed, with wide sandy areas interspersed with rocky platforms that emerge at low tide, ideal for exploring small pools and discovering marine life.

Water Quality and Characteristics

The waters of Playa de Portizuelo are generally of excellent quality and often have notable transparency, a characteristic of many Asturian beaches. Their emerald green color invites a swim, although we must consider that, as in much of the Cantabrian Sea, the water temperature is cool, even in summer. A small Chiringuito or drinks and snacks stall is common during the busiest months, where we can get something refreshing or an ice cream. The nearby Parking is essential for access, though, as mentioned, it can fill up. It's important to remember that this beach does not have services like umbrella and sunbed rentals, nor full accessibility for people with reduced mobility, which underscores its wilder, more natural profile.

Best Time to Visit

The choice of when to visit Playa de Portizuelo will largely depend on what we seek in our experience. Each season offers us a different facet of this wonderful Valdés beach.

Summer: Sun and Swimming

If our priority is swimming and enjoying the sun, the summer months (July and August) are the obvious choice. During this time, the weather is warmer and the chances of sunny days are higher. It's when lifeguard services and the chiringuito are usually operational, and the beach has more atmosphere. However, it's also the busiest season, so we may find the parking more crowded and the beach with more people. Even so, its size and the distribution of its rocky areas always allow for finding a quiet corner.
