Welcome to Gijón, fellow travelers! And when we talk about Gijón, it's impossible not to think of its most precious jewel: Playa de San Lorenzo. For us, this is not just a beach, it's the soul of the city, a natural canvas where Gijón's life is painted day by day. With its characteristic shell shape, its almost one and a half kilometers in length, and its mythical promenade, affectionately known as 'El Muro', San Lorenzo invites us to experience the Cantabrian Sea at its finest, without straying one bit from the urban pulse. How to Get to Playa de San Lorenzo

Getting to Playa de San Lorenzo is, in itself, part of the experience of visiting Gijón. Being an urban beach, its accessibility is unbeatable, whether we're coming from outside the city or are already exploring its streets. For us, comfort is key, and San Lorenzo offers it to us on a silver platter.

If we arrive by car, we should know that Gijón has a good road network connecting it with the rest of Asturias and the peninsula. Once in the city, access to the vicinity of the beach is straightforward, although finding parking can be a challenge, especially during the summer months or on weekends. There are several underground parking lots nearby, such as the San Agustín Shopping Center or the Plaza Mayor, which are very practical options. However, we always recommend parking a bit further away and enjoying a pleasant walk through the city to the shore, or using public transport, a much more sustainable and relaxed option.

The Gijón urban bus network (EMTUSA) is excellent and has numerous lines with stops all along 'El Muro' and on the streets adjacent to the beach. Lines such as 1, 4, 10, 14, or 20 will leave us just steps from the sand, allowing us to forget the car and dive directly into the beach atmosphere. For those who prefer a more active option, the bicycle is a fantastic alternative, with bike lanes covering much of the city and leading us directly to the beach. Furthermore, Gijón's train station and intercity bus station are relatively close to the center, making the transition from other points in Asturias or Spain to the beach smooth and uncomplicated. There are no excuses not to come and enjoy this urban paradise.

When stepping onto Playa de San Lorenzo, the first thing that captivates us is its sand. It's a fine, golden sand, characteristic of the Cantabrian coast, which feels incredibly pleasant underfoot. We love walking barefoot on it, feeling its soft texture and how it adapts to each step. Its expanse allows us to always find a spot, even on the busiest days, and its cleanliness reflects the constant care it receives, something we greatly value in an urban beach of this nature.

The waters of the Cantabrian Sea at San Lorenzo are, in a word, invigorating. They are clean and transparent waters, although their hue can vary with the sky and depth. The temperature is typically Atlantic, meaning refreshing, but once we get used to it, it's most pleasant for a good swim. The water quality is constantly monitored, giving us absolute peace of mind when enjoying a dip. Also, being a shell-shaped beach, the waves are usually moderate, making it safe for swimming, especially in the areas closer to the shore.

However, we must not forget that we are on the Cantabrian coast, and the tides play a fundamental role here. We enjoy observing how the beach landscape changes drastically with high and low tide. At low tide, the beach expands enormously, revealing a vast expanse of perfect sand for long walks, games, and for the little ones to explore. At high tide, the sand recedes, and the sea comes close to the promenade, creating a more intimate and dynamic atmosphere. This duality is part of San Lorenzo's charm and offers us different experiences each time we visit. The waves, often present, are also an attraction for lovers of water sports, making San Lorenzo a meeting point for surfers and bodyboarders.
