How to Get to Cala Roques Planes

Getting to Cala Roques Planes is part of the adventure and, at the same time, one of the reasons it maintains its wilder character. It's not a cove with easy car access right to the sand, which contributes to its tranquility. Generally, we recommend several options to get close:

By Car

If we come by car, the closest reference point is Sant Antoni de Calonge or Platja d'Aro. From there, we can head towards the area of the Camí de Ronda that connects both towns. The cove is located halfway between the port of Sant Antoni and Platja de Belladona in Platja d'Aro. We'll find some public parking areas, often paid during high season, near the access points to the Camí de Ronda. Once parked, most of the journey is done on foot.

On Foot via the Camí de Ronda

This is, without a doubt, the most rewarding option and the one we always choose if time allows. The Camí de Ronda is a spectacular coastal path that runs along the entire Costa Brava, and the section that passes by Cala Roques Planes is one of the most beautiful. We can start our walk from Sant Antoni de Calonge (approximately 20-30 minutes) or from Platja d'Aro (a similar time, depending on the starting point). The path is well signposted and offers impressive panoramic views of cliffs, Mediterranean pines, and, of course, the sea. The cove is reached by descending some stairs or a rocky path from the Camí, so it's important to wear comfortable and appropriate footwear.

Public Transport

Public transport will drop us off in Sant Antoni de Calonge or Platja d'Aro. From there, the only option is to continue on foot along the Camí de Ronda, as we've already mentioned. Although it's a viable option, it's less direct and can lengthen the arrival time, but it allows us to enjoy a pleasant coastal walk.

The Sand and Water

One of the most distinctive characteristics of Cala Roques Planes is precisely its composition. Here we won't find the fine, golden sand of other more urbanized beaches. Instead, the cove surprises us with coarse sand and, in some areas, a mix of small pebbles and rocks polished by the sea. This type of ground, which we classify as mixed, gives it a wilder and more authentic appearance, and reminds us that we're in a little-intervened natural environment. The texture under our feet is firm and, at the same time, provides a gentle massage as we walk.

But if the sand is special, the water of Cala Roques Planes is simply spectacular. Its shades range from an intense blue in the deeper areas to a crystal-clear emerald green near the shore. The transparency is such that we can observe the seabed with astonishing clarity, even without goggles. This characteristic makes it a paradise for lovers of snorkeling and shallow diving. We've spent hours exploring its submerged rocks, discovering small schools of fish, starfish, and a diversity of marine life that has left us amazed. The water quality is exceptional, clean and refreshing, ideal for a restorative swim on the hottest summer days. Furthermore, being a more sheltered cove, its waters are usually more protected from wind and waves, making it very pleasant for swimming.

Services and Facilities

As we've already mentioned, the beauty of Cala Roques Planes lies in its pristine nature, and this implies an almost total absence of services and facilities. For us, this is one of its greatest virtues, as it allows us to enjoy a more intimate and less commercial beach experience. Don't expect to find beach bars, showers, lifeguards, public toilets, or umbrella and sunbed rentals here.

This means that if we decide to spend the day in this cove, we must be prepared. We always recommend bringing everything we need: water, drinks, something to snack on, sunscreen, an umbrella (if we don't like direct sun), and towels. It's also important to bring a bag to collect our waste and leave the cove as we found it, leaving no trace of our visit. The lack of lifeguards means we must be especially cautious when swimming, especially if we're with children or if sea conditions are not optimal. Accessibility is also limited; the access from the Camí de Ronda can be somewhat steep and rocky, so it's not a cove suitable for people with reduced mobility or for baby strollers.
