How to Get to Playa de La Rijana

Getting to Playa de La Rijana is part of the adventure and offers the first spectacular views. This cove is strategically located on the N-340, the coastal road that winds between cliffs and small villages of the Costa Tropical granadina, between the municipalities of Castell de Ferro and Calahonda, within the municipal area of Gualchos.

Access and Parking

Access to the beach is relatively straightforward, although it requires some attention to not miss the entrance. We'll see an improvised parking area along the N-340 road itself, just before a tunnel, or a small turn-off that leads to a more designated area. It's important to be cautious when parking, especially during high season, as space is limited and the road can be busy. From the parking area, a well-marked path, albeit with some slope and steps, will lead us directly to the sand. We advise wearing comfortable shoes for the descent and ascent, especially if we're carrying gear. This access, while not complicated, indicates that the beach does not have full accessibility for people with reduced mobility.

The Sand and Water

Once we descend to Playa de La Rijana, the first thing we notice is the particularity of its ground. Here we won't find the typical fine, golden sand that characterizes other beaches. Instead, Playa de La Rijana welcomes us with a fascinating mix of dark sand and pebbles polished by the sea. It's a mixed-type sand, with small stones that give it a more natural and authentic character. We recommend bringing water shoes if we're sensitive to stones, although their presence is part of the cove's rustic charm.

But if the sand is special, the water at La Rijana is simply spectacular. Its waters are crystal-clear, with an astonishing transparency that allows us to see the seabed with exceptional clarity. The hues range from emerald green in shallow areas to deep blue in open water. The absence of strong currents and the protection of the cliffs make the sea generally calm, turning it into an ideal place for bathing and, above all, for observing marine life. • Parking: As mentioned, there is a parking area, albeit informal, at the roadside. It's important to arrive early during high season to secure a spot.
• Chiringuitos: During the summer months, there is usually a small and charming chiringuito right on the beach. Here we can enjoy refreshing drinks, ice cream, and often some simple dishes like sardine skewers or salads. It's the perfect touch to avoid having to leave the cove for a meal.
• Lifeguard Service: During the high season (generally from June to September), the beach has a lifeguard service, which gives us additional peace of mind, especially if we're with children or if we venture to swim a bit farther out. Outside this season, it's important to take extra precautions.

High Season vs. Low Season

• Summer (July and August): While summer guarantees us warm weather and the most pleasant waters for bathing, it's also the time of highest visitor numbers. The beach, being a small cove (approximately 250 meters long), can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. If our priority is to enjoy the atmosphere and the services of the chiringuito, summer is ideal. However, if we're looking for relaxation and tranquility, it might not be the best option.
• Spring (April, May, June): For us, spring is one of the be
