Introduction
Today we explore one of those hidden treasures that the Granada coast, often overshadowed by its Malaga or Almeria neighbors, jealously guards. We're talking about Playa del Castillo de Baños, a spot that not only gifts us the inherent beauty of the Mediterranean but also immerses us in a piece of history and tranquility. Located in the small and charming municipality of Polopos, in the province of Granada, this beach is an invitation to disconnect, savor the calm, and enjoy a natural environment that still retains its authenticity.
From the moment we set foot on Playa del Castillo de Baños, we perceive a different atmosphere. We won't find the crowds of other coasts here, but a more serene environment, where the sound of the waves and the sea breeze are the true protagonists. Its peculiar dark sand, characteristic of this area of the Costa Tropical, contrasts wonderfully with the turquoise blue of its waters, inviting us to a refreshing and restorative swim. It is, without a doubt, a wise choice for those seeking a more intimate and relaxed beach experience, without giving up the comfort of essential services.
What really distinguishes this beach is the imposing presence of the remains of the ancient castle that gives it its name. This fortress, although in ruins, adds a touch of mysticism and an unparalleled photographic backdrop, reminding us of the rich history that has shaped these lands. Playa del Castillo de Baños is more than just a sandy beach; it's a place where nature, history, and peace come together to offer us a truly memorable holiday experience on the Granada beaches.
How to Get to Playa del Castillo de Baños
Getting to Playa del Castillo de Baños is relatively straightforward, although it requires a small detour from the busier routes, which contributes to its charm and helps maintain its tranquil atmosphere. If we're coming from the A-7 motorway (Autovía del Mediterráneo), which runs along the entire Andalusian coast, we should take the exit towards La Mamola or Polopos. The beach is located in the hamlet of Castillo de Baños, belonging to the municipality of Polopos.
From Granada City
From Granada city, the journey takes approximately an hour and a half to two hours, depending on traffic. We'll take the A-44 towards Motril, and once there, we'll join the A-7 towards Almería. We'll look for the specific exit for Castillo de Baños or La Mamola. The road is picturesque, winding through the Sierra de la Contraviesa and offering spectacular views of the Mediterranean. It's a journey that is already part of the experience.
From Málaga or Almería

The Sand and Water
Playa del Castillo de Baños surprises us with a distinctive feature of the Granada beaches in this area: its sand. Don't expect the fine golden sand of other coasts. Here, the star is sand of a dark, almost grayish hue, mixed with small pebbles and stones, giving it a unique texture and a natural, wild appearance. It's sand that, although not purely fine, is comfortable for walking and spreading out our towel, and it warms up in a particular way under the Andalusian sun.
As for the water, we find a true delight for the senses. The waters of Playa del Castillo de Baños are famous for their transparency and their blue-green hue, inviting us to dive in immediately. The clarity is such that, on calm days, we can observe the seabed with the naked eye. The waters are generally calm, protected to some extent by the orientation of the bay, making it an ideal place for swimming, especially for families with young children. The water temperature is pleasant during the summer months, and entry into the sea is usually gentle, without significant drops, which adds an extra level of safety and comfort to our beach experience. The water quality, often recognized with the Blue Flag, is a testament to its excellent condition.
