How to get to Playa de Abrela

Getting to Playa de Abrela is relatively easy, making it an accessible destination for everyone. If we are coming from inland Galicia or from other regions, the most common route is to take the A-8 motorway (Autovía del Cantábrico) to the exit that leads towards the Lugo coast. Once on the main LU-862 road, which runs along the entire Mariña, we must pay attention to the signs that will guide us towards O Vicedo.

From the center of O Vicedo, access to the beach is well signposted. We will turn off onto local roads that will lead us directly to the vicinity of the beach. For those traveling by car, a highly valued aspect is the availability of parking nearby. Although it is not a huge parking lot, there is usually enough space for visitors, especially outside the peak hours of the high season. We always recommend arriving early during the summer months to secure a good spot. The last stretch to the sand may require a small descent, but it is perfectly passable and part of the charm of discovering this place.

The sand and the water

One of the biggest attractions of Playa de Abrela is, without a doubt, its fine, golden sand. When we step on it, we notice its softness, ideal for laying out a towel, building sandcastles with the little ones, or simply enjoying a relaxing walk along the shore. The texture of the sand is uniform and pleasant, without large stones or pebbles to bother you when walking. This characteristic makes it especially comfortable for all visitors, from young children to the elderly.

The waters of Abrela are typically Atlantic: clean, transparent, and with that emerald hue that we love so much about the Galician coast. Thanks to its cove configuration, the beach is quite protected from strong winds and currents, which translates into generally moderate waves. This makes it a safe and very pleasant place for swimming, even for those who are not entirely comfortable with rough waves. The water temperature, as is usual in Galicia, can be a bit cool, especially early in the summer, but it is tremendously refreshing on hot days and something we quickly get used to. The quality of its waters, certified by the Blue Flag, gives us additional peace of mind when enjoying a dip.

Furthermore, we have showers to rinse off the salt and sand after swimming, a highly valued service for maintaining hygiene and comfort. Toilets/WCs are also available, clean and accessible. For those who wish to have a drink or eat without moving too far from the sand, the beach usually has a chiringuito or nearby establishment where we can enjoy a refreshing drink, an ice cream, or even some typical local tapas. And as mentioned before, the parking nearby is a strong point for user comfort. Although it does not offer full accessibility for people with very reduced mobility (due to its natural setting), the essential services are designed for general enjoyment.

Best time to visit

The choice of the best time to visit Playa de Abrela will largely depend on our preferences and the type of experience we are looking for. We always recommend the summer months, especially July and August, if we want to fully enjoy the sun and swimming. During these months, temperatures are more pleasant, days are longer, and the beach has all its services active, including the lifeguard team. However, it is also the busiest time, so the beach will be more crowded.

If we prefer tranquility and a more relaxed atmosphere, the months of June and September are an excellent option. The weather is still generally good, with sunny days and mild temperatures, but the number of people decreases considerably. It is the ideal time for long walks along the shore, reading a book in the sun without crowds, and enjoying the peace that emanates from the place. For lovers
