How to Get to Playa de O Muíño

Getting to Playa de O Muíño is relatively straightforward, and the journey itself immerses us in the beauty of the Galician landscape. We recommend the car as the most comfortable option, allowing us greater freedom to also explore the surroundings of A Guarda and the Pontevedra coast. If we are coming from the north, for example, from Vigo or Pontevedra, we will take the AP-9 and then the AG-57 towards Baiona, before continuing on the PO-552 which will take us directly to A Guarda. Once in the municipality, the beach is well signposted, and access is easy, without major complications.

For those approaching from the south, from the border with Portugal or from Tui, the PO-552 road is also the main access route, running along the coast and offering spectacular views of the Atlantic and the Miño estuary. Playa de O Muíño is located in the westernmost part of A Guarda, very close to the river mouth, giving it a privileged and easy-to-find location with any GPS or map application.

Parking Options

One of the advantages of this beach is the availability of parking. In the vicinity of the beach, especially during the high season, parking areas are set up which, although they can fill up on the busiest days, usually offer sufficient space for visitors. We always advise arriving early if visiting in the middle of summer to secure a good spot. The proximity of the parking to the sand is a convenience we highly value, especially if we are loaded with umbrellas, coolers, and everything needed for a day at the beach.

Public Transport

Although the car is the most practical option, there are some public transport alternatives. A Guarda has bus lines connecting it to major Galician cities, such as Vigo or Pontevedra. Once in A Guarda, Playa de O Muíño is not far from the center, so a short walk or a taxi can be viable options. However, for most tourists, and to fully enjoy the flexibility, a private vehicle remains the best choice.

It is clean, soft sand, ideal for walking barefoot, laying out a towel and enjoying the sun, or for the little ones to build sandcastles effortlessly. Its uniform texture and the absence of stones or pebbles on most of the beach contribute to a very comfortable experience. This type of sand also facilitates access to the water, making the transition smooth and without steep drops, something we greatly appreciate when we go with children or elderly people.

Calm Estuary Waters

The waters of Playa de O Muíño are one of its greatest attractions. Being located at the mouth of the Miño River, it is protected from the large waves and strong currents of the Atlantic Ocean. This results in generally calm waters that are shallow at the shore, creating a kind of perfect natural pool for bathing. The absence of large waves makes it a very safe beach for children, who can play freely at the water's edge under our watchful eye.

In addition to its calmness, the water temperature is usually slightly warmer than that of Galicia's oceanic beaches, especially in the summer months. This is due to the influence of the river and less exposure to the cold Atlantic currents. For us, this is a very positive point, as it allows us to enjoy longer and more pleasant swims, without the need to get used to freezing temperatures. The combination of fine sand and gentle waters makes Playa de O Muíño an idyllic place for relaxation and aquatic enjoyment.
