We are talking about Playa de Voutoumi, a hidden gem on the small island of Antipaxos, a destination that undoubtedly deserves a privileged place on our list of must-visit beaches in Greece. From the moment our eyes land on it, we understand why it is so acclaimed: its waters, of an almost unreal turquoise hue, blend with a bed of white pebbles that shine under the sun, creating a visual spectacle that leaves us breathless.

Playa de Voutoumi is not just a place to sunbathe; it is an experience that invites us to disconnect, to immerse ourselves in the serenity of its waters, and to be carried away by the beauty of its surroundings. How to Get to Playa de Voutoumi

Getting to Playa de Voutoumi is, in itself, part of the adventure and charm of this destination. Since Antipaxos is a very small island with no airport, the main access is by sea, usually from the nearby island of Paxos or, to a lesser extent, from mainland Greece.

From Paxos

The most common and practical way to get there is by taking a boat from Gaios, the capital of Paxos. Several options are available:

• Water taxis: These are the most popular and flexible option. Small boats that depart regularly from the port of Gaios, especially during the high season. They will take us directly to Playa de Voutoumi and sometimes also to other coves of Antipaxos. Schedules are frequent, and we can arrange a pick-up time for our return to Paxos. The journey usually takes about 15-20 minutes and offers spectacular views of the coast.
• Organized tours: Many companies in Gaios, Lakka, and Loggos (Paxos) offer day trips that include stops at Voutoumi, Mesovrika, and other Antipaxos beaches, often combined with visits to the sea caves of Paxos. These tours usually include free time for swimming and exploring.
• Private boat rental: For those seeking more freedom and privacy, renting a small boat (with or without a skipper, depending on our boating license) in Paxos is an excellent option. This allows us to explore the coast of Antipaxos at our own pace, discovering secret coves and enjoying the privacy of Playa de Voutoumi before or after the arrival of the water taxis.

From Mainland Greece

Although less common for a direct visit to Voutoumi, we can reach Paxos from the ports of Igoumenitsa or Parga on the mainland, and from there take a boat to Antipaxos. This option is more suitable if we are on a broader tour of Greece beaches and the Ionian Islands.

Once our boat drops us off near the Voutoumi coast, we will typically have to swim a few meters or walk along a floating walkway to the shore. The experience of arriving by sea, with the turquoise waters surrounding us, is unforgettable and prepares us for the beauty that awaits us on the shore.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Voutoumi is famous for its unique characteristics that distinguish it from many other Antipaxos beaches and Greece beaches in general. Do not expect to find fine golden sand here; instead, we will delight in a composition of white pebbles and small stones that give it a pristine appearance and unmatched luminosity.

The floor of Voutoumi is covered by thousands of white, polished pebbles, varying in size from small stones to larger cobbles. This feature is what gives the beach its distinctive color and particular shine under the sun. Although it may not be the softest texture for walking barefoot (we advise wearing water shoes or aqua socks), the visual beauty they provide is undeniable. The pebbles, being so light, reflect the sunlight and contribute to the intensity of the water's turquoise color, creating a spectacular contrast that is a delight for the eyes.

But if there is one thing that truly defines Voutoumi, it is its waters. They are of a vibrant turquoise hue that seems taken from a dream, a palette of blues and greens that intensifies as we go further in. The transparency is absolute; we can see the seabed with astonishing clarity, even at several meters deep. This clarity is largely due to the absence of fine suspended sand and the clean currents of the Ionian Sea.

The waters are generally calm and shallow near the shore, making them ideal for swimming and for children to play safely. The temperature is usually very pleasant during the summer months, offering us a refreshing escape from the heat.
