How to Get to Playa de Avlemonas

Getting to Playa de Avlemonas is part of the adventure and charm of visiting the island of Kythira. First, we must reach the island itself. Kythira is located between the Peloponnese and Crete, and is accessible mainly by ferry or plane. If we choose the ferry, the main connections are from the port of Piraeus in Athens, as well as from Neapoli and Gythio on the Peloponnese peninsula. The crossing from Piraeus is longer, ideal for those who enjoy the sea voyage, while from Neapoli it is much shorter and more convenient if we are already exploring the southern Peloponnese.

For those who prefer speed, Kythira has a national airport (Kithira Island National Airport 'Alexandros Aristotelous Onassis', code JTR) with regular flights from Athens, especially during the high season. Once on the island, whether at the port (Diakofti) or the airport, the best way to get to Avlemonas is by renting a car. This will not only allow us to comfortably reach Playa de Avlemonas, but also to explore the rest of the island at our own pace. The distance from Diakofti is approximately 10-15 kilometers, a short and picturesque journey that introduces us to the rural beauty of Kythira. From the capital, Chora, the trip is similar, offering spectacular views of the coast and the island's interior. There are some local bus routes, but their frequency may be limited, so a private vehicle is undoubtedly the most practical option to fully enjoy all the Kythira beaches and their surroundings.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de Avlemonas, it's important to understand that it is not a typical fine golden sand beach, but a charming cove where the main feature is pebbles and fine gravel, mixed with some sandy areas. The predominant 'ground type' is pebble, which gives it a rustic and natural character that we, lovers of authenticity, find fascinating. However, don't worry about comfort; the pebbles are small and smooth, making walking and lying down pleasant. Often, nearby tavernas place sunbeds and umbrellas that further soften the experience.

But if there's something that truly captivates us about Playa de Avlemonas, it's the quality of its waters. They are simply spectacular: of an intense turquoise color, so incredibly clear that we can see the seabed with perfect clarity, even at several meters deep. The cove is well protected from the wind, which means the sea is usually calm, like a natural pool, ideal for swimming and relaxing without worries. The shallow waters near the shore make it perfect for children, who can splash around safely. Furthermore, visibility is excellent, making it a small paradise for snorkeling. We don't need to go far out to discover vibrant marine life among the rocks and pebbles. It is, in short, one of those Greece beaches that, although it may not have the finest sand, more than compensates with the purity and beauty of its aquatic environment.

Services and Facilities

Despite its intimate size, Playa de Avlemonas and the surrounding village offer a good range of services and facilities that contribute to a comfortable and pleasant beach experience. Being a cove integrated into the heart of the village, we won't find large tourist complexes, but services managed locally and with a particular charm, something we highly value.

Directly on the waterfront, and often with tables almost touching the water, we will find several tavernas and restaurants. These establishments not only serve delicious local food, especially fresh fish, but many of them also offer umbrella and sunbed rentals for their customers or even for the general public, allowing us to relax in the shade with all the comforts. It is common for these same restaurants to have toilets/WCs for their customers' use, and on some occasions, we will also find public showers near the beach, perfect for washing off the salt after a refreshing swim.

Regarding parking, as it is a small village, parking is generally done on nearby streets or in small designated areas. Although there is no large centralized parking lot, we always find space, especially if we don't visit during the absolute peak of the high season. What we won't find are services like lifeguards, organized sports areas, or rental equipment for water sports.
