How to Get to Playa de Marmaka

Getting to Playa de Marmaka is, in itself, part of the adventure and the charm that surrounds it. Its location, slightly removed from the busier centers, helps preserve its serene and pristine atmosphere. While it is not one of the most accessible Ithaca beaches, the reward of its beauty justifies the effort. Generally, there are two main ways to reach this hidden paradise, and both offer spectacular views of the Ionian landscape.

By Boat

For many, the most pleasant and scenic way to reach Marmaka is by sea. Numerous boat excursions depart from the picturesque coastal villages of Kioni and Frikes, which are easily accessible from the capital, Vathy. These tours usually include stops at various coves and Ithaca beaches along the coast, with Marmaka being a favorite. Approaching by boat, the view of its white pebbles and emerald waters from the sea is simply spectacular, inviting us to jump directly into its refreshing waters. It is an ideal option for those who want to enjoy a full day exploring the coast of Ithaca without worrying about land transport.

On Foot or by Vehicle (with caution)

It is also possible to reach Playa de Marmaka by land, although it requires a bit more determination. From the village of Exogi, located in the heights of the island, a path descends towards the coast. This path, which in its final stretch becomes a dirt track, can be a challenge for some vehicles, so we recommend caution and, if possible, opting for a 4x4 vehicle or, even better, leaving the car at an accessible point and continuing on foot. The walk is rewarding, offering impressive panoramic views of the bay and the Ithaca channel. It is an excellent option for hiking lovers who want to combine physical activity with the reward of an idyllic beach. The available 'parking' is informal, along the track, which reinforces its wild and less developed character.

The Sand and Water

The most distinctive feature of Playa de Marmaka is, without a doubt, its peculiar 'sand'. Here we will not find the typical fine or golden sand we associate with many Greece beaches. Instead, we are welcomed by a carpet of white pebbles, polished and of different sizes, covering the entire expanse of the beach. These pebbles, ranging from small stones to larger cobbles, are responsible for the incredible transparency of its waters. With no sand to be stirred up by movement, the sea at Marmaka is a crystal-clear mirror that allows us to see the seabed with astonishing clarity.

The 'type of ground' is, therefore, purely 'pebble', which gives it a rustic and natural charm. We advise wearing suitable footwear for walking on the stones, both in and out of the water, as this will make our experience much more comfortable. Once this small particularity is overcome, the reward is immense. The waters of Marmaka are of a vibrant turquoise blue, which intensifies as we go further in. They are calm, serene, and surprisingly warm during the summer months, inviting us to immerse ourselves and enjoy a prolonged swim in an environment of absolute peace. The absence of sand also means the water remains impeccable, without suspended particles, making it an exceptional place for underwater observation.

Services and Facilities

Playa de Marmaka is a perfect example of one of those Ithaca beaches that prioritize natural beauty over large infrastructure. If we are looking for beach clubs with loud music, sophisticated restaurants, or a wide range of organized water sports, Marmaka may not be our ideal destination. However, for those who value authenticity and simplicity, its 'services' are more than sufficient and integrate harmoniously with the environment.

We highlight that, although it is a fairly 'wild' beach, it is not completely devoid of basic comforts. At the back of the beach, we often find a small 'Chiringuito' or a rustic taverna. This establishment, usually family-run, offers refreshing drinks, coffees, and sometimes some sandwiches or simple dishes of local cuisine. It is the perfect place to take a break from the sun and enjoy a snack while contemplating the sea views. The presence of this chiringuito adds a touch of Greek hospitality without detracting one bit from the natural character of the beach.
