How to Get to Playa de Mistra Bay

Getting to Playa de Mistra Bay is part of the adventure and, although it's not as accessible as the more popular beaches, the journey is worth it. We always recommend renting a car in Malta, as it offers the greatest flexibility for exploring corners like this one. From Mellieħa, the journey is relatively short, following the signs towards the east coast. The road winds down to the bay, offering spectacular panoramic views as you approach.

By Car

If you choose to drive, you'll find informal parking along the road that borders the bay. Don't expect an organized parking lot with marked spaces; it's more about finding a safe spot to leave your vehicle. The advantage is that, being a less crowded bay, there's usually availability, especially outside of the peak summer hours.

By Public Transport

Public transport in Malta is efficient, but getting to Mistra Bay may require a bit more effort. The bus lines connecting Mellieħa with other parts of the island will drop you off nearby, but you'll likely have to walk about 15-20 minutes from the nearest stop. The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de Mistra Bay, it's important to emphasize that we're not dealing with a typical fine-sand beach. Its charm lies in its more rugged and natural character. We always recommend bringing water shoes or appropriate footwear, as it will make accessing and walking along the shore and in the sea much more comfortable.

The waters of Mistra Bay are simply spectacular. Their crystal-clear clarity is almost hypnotic, allowing you to see the seabed with astonishing sharpness. This makes it a paradise for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts, as we'll tell you about later. The entry into the sea is gentle in some areas, but in others it can be more abrupt due to the rock formations, adding a touch of adventure to the experience.

As we've already mentioned, Playa de Mistra Bay is distinguished by its natural and less urbanized atmosphere. This means that services and facilities are limited, which is part of its appeal for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle. You won't find major tourist infrastructure, but you will find the essentials for a pleasant day.

Chiringuitos and Food

During the summer months, it's common to find a small chiringuito or food stall offering refreshments, ice cream, and snacks. We discovered a charming stall run by locals, where we enjoyed a cold drink and a sandwich while gazing at the sea. Don't expect a luxury restaurant, but rather a simple and authentic option to satisfy your appetite.

Parking

As already mentioned, parking is informal, along the road that descends to the bay. It's free and, with a bit of luck, you can always find a spot. However, be careful when parking so as not to block the way.

Other Services

Currently, Mistra Bay does not have public showers, permanent toilets/WCs, or official and constant lifeguard service, although during peak season lifeguards may appear occasionally. You also won't find umbrella and sunbed rentals. We always advise bringing your own towels, a portable umbrella, and everything you might need for your comfort. The lack of these services is what helps maintain the bay's pristine and tranquil character, so we encourage you to come prepared and enjoy this authenticity.
