We venture into one of those places that, once visited, remain etched in memory forever. Playa de Legzira, located on the coast of Sidi Ifni, Morocco, is not just any beach. It's a natural canvas sculpted by the relentless Atlantic and the passage of time, world-famous for its impressive red rock arches that rise majestically above the shore. Upon arrival, the view is simply breathtaking. The ochre and reddish tones of the cliffs contrast spectacularly with the deep blue of the ocean and the reddish-golden color of the sand, creating a landscape that seems from another planet. It's a destination that attracts photographers, adventurers, and all those seeking the raw, unadorned beauty of nature.

We consider Playa de Legzira to be much more than a simple stretch of coast; it's an immersive experience. The constant sound of waves crashing against the arches and the salt-laden sea breeze remind us of the untamable force of nature. Although one of its most iconic arches collapsed in 2016, the beach still retains its magic and the remaining rock formations continue to defy time, offering an unparalleled visual spectacle. It's a place where time seems to stand still, inviting us to contemplation and a deep connection with the environment.

How to Get to Playa de Legzira

Getting to Playa de Legzira is part of the adventure and, although it requires some planning, the effort is richly rewarded. This natural gem is located about 10 kilometers north of the city of Sidi Ifni and about 150 kilometers south of Agadir. The most comfortable way to get there is undoubtedly by rental car. We recommend renting a vehicle from Agadir or Marrakech, which gives us the freedom to explore the coast and its surroundings at our own pace. The main road leading to Sidi Ifni (N1) is in good condition.

Once we approach Sidi Ifni, we must take a well-signposted turnoff towards the beach. The last stretch is a paved road that descends to sea level, with some sharp curves and spectacular panoramic views. There are informal parking areas just before the descent to the beach. For those who prefer not to drive, it's possible to hire a taxi from Sidi Ifni, although the price can vary and it's advisable to negotiate it in advance. There are also some options for public transport or shared 'grand taxis' that cover the route between Sidi Ifni and Legzira, although their frequency may be limited. Arriving at the beach itself involves a short walk or descent via rustic stairs from the parking area to the sand, adding a touch of exploration to the journey.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Legzira surprises us with reddish-orange colored sand, a distinctive feature that sets it apart from many other Moroccan beaches. This unique hue is due to the mineral composition of the cliffs that flank it, eroded over millennia by wind and sea. It's a mixed type of sand, with some areas finer and others with small gravel and shells, making it pleasant for walking barefoot, although we recommend being mindful of rockier areas, especially near the arches. The predominant ground type is sand, but the presence of imposing rock formations is undeniable and forms an integral part of its charm.

The Atlantic waters at Legzira are cool and often invigorating. Being an open ocean coast, the waves can be considerable, making it a point of interest for more experienced surfers. We always advise caution when swimming, as currents can be strong and there are no official lifeguard services on the beach. The water clarity varies depending on sea conditions and sediment, but generally offers acceptable clarity for a refreshing swim. The vastness of the ocean and the absence of massive constructions give us a feeling of freedom and total connection with nature.

Services and Facilities

Playa de Legzira is, by nature, a wild and undeveloped beach, which precisely contributes to its untamed charm. Therefore, we should not expect to find a wide range of modern services and facilities. We value this authenticity, but it's important to go prepared. There are no public showers, permanent toilets, or officially managed umbrella and sunbed rentals. The philosophy here is one of self-sufficiency and respect for the natural environment.

However, along the informal promenade that borders the beach, especially near the main access area, some small establishments are usually set up. We find very simple chiringuitos and restaurants, often run by local families, offering fresh food, mainly fish and seafood, tagines, and mint tea. These places are perfect for regaining strength and enjoying local cuisine with sea views. Parking is informal and free, generally at the top of the cliff or near the beach access points. It's essential to remember that there is no permanent lifeguard service, so caution is key when swimming. The absence of these 'conventional' services is part of what makes Legzira so special and preserved.

Best Time to Visit

Choosing the right time to visit Playa de Legzira can make a big difference in our experience. We consider spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) to be the best times to fully enjoy this wonderful beach. During these months, the weather is generally mild and pleasant, with warm temperatures.
