When we think of Chiapas beaches, we often imagine jungle or mountains, but the coast of this state surprises us with gems like San Benito.

How to Get to Playa San Benito

Getting to Playa San Benito is relatively straightforward, especially if we're coming from Tapachula, the largest city and main hub of the Soconusco region in Chiapas. From Tapachula, we can take the highway that leads directly to Puerto Madero. Playa San Benito is located just a few kilometers before reaching the port, well signposted. The drive usually takes between 25 and 40 minutes, depending on traffic and where exactly we depart from in Tapachula. The road is in good condition, making the trip comfortable and pleasant.

If we prefer public transportation, the most popular and economical option are the 'colectivos' or combis. These vehicles depart regularly from downtown Tapachula or the bus terminal, heading to Puerto Madero or directly to Playa San Benito. They're an excellent way to immerse ourselves in local life and observe the rural landscape of Chiapas. Taxis are also available which, although a bit more expensive, offer greater comfort and speed. For those arriving by plane, Tapachula International Airport (TAP) is the gateway, and from there, we can take a taxi or bus to downtown Tapachula and then connect with other transportation to the beach. It's a journey that is undoubtedly worth it for the reward that awaits us.

The Sand and Water

One of the most distinctive and, at the same time, most striking features of Playa San Benito is its sand. Don't expect the typical white sands of the Caribbean; here, nature gifts us with dark, almost black, volcanic sand. Its texture is predominantly fine and soft, making it extremely pleasant for walking barefoot and feeling it slide between our toes. This dark color has the particularity of absorbing more heat from the sun, so we recommend wearing sandals or flip-flops during the hours of strongest sun.

The Pacific waters in this area are generally warm and comforting, ideal for a refreshing dip. The waves are mostly gentle and moderate, making Playa San Benito a safe and suitable place for swimming, even for the youngest family members. However, as with any ocean beach, it's always prudent to be aware of currents and follow lifeguard instructions. The combination of dark sand with the deep blue of the ocean creates a unique and very photogenic contrast, especially at sunrise or sunset, when the colors of the sky reflect on the wet surface of the beach, offering us unforgettable postcards of the Chiapas beaches.

Services and Facilities

Although Playa San Benito isn't a luxury destination with large resorts, we find an adequate service infrastructure to enjoy an authentic and comfortable beach day. The most characteristic features are the 'chiringuitos' or 'palapas', which are small rustic restaurants with palm roofs, lined along the coast. These establishments offer a varied gastronomic selection, mainly based on fresh seafood, and are the social heart of the beach. Here we can rent umbrellas and sun loungers for a modest price, allowing us to relax in the shade and enjoy the sea breeze.

Regarding other facilities, the beach has designated parking areas, although they are often informal spaces along the highway or at the entrances to the palapas. Some of these palapas offer basic showers and toilets/WCs for their customers, which is very convenient after a swim in the sea. During high season and weekends, there are usually lifeguards monitoring the swimming areas, adding an extra layer of safety. While there are no large stores, the chiringuitos usually sell drinks, snacks, and some basic beach items. It's a relaxed and functional environment, designed for us to feel at home, enjoying the simplicity and natural beauty of the beaches of Mexico.

Best Time to Visit

To plan our visit to Playa San Benito, it's important to consider the two main seasons that mark the climate of Chiapas: the dry season and the rainy season. The best time to visit this beach, and generally the coast of Chiapas, is during the dry season, which runs approximately from November to May. During these months, we'll enjoy sunny days, clear skies, and warm but pleasant temperatures. Humidity is lower and the chances of rain are minimal, allowing us to make the most of outdoor activities and spectacular sunsets.
