How to Get to Playa Cuyutlán

Getting to Playa Cuyutlán is relatively straightforward, though it gives us the feeling of heading to a secluded and special place. The beach is located in the municipality of Armería, in the state of Colima. If we're coming from the state capital, the city of Colima, the drive takes approximately an hour and a half to two hours, following federal highway 200 towards Manzanillo and then taking the turnoff towards Cuyutlán. The roads are usually in good condition, allowing for a comfortable and scenic journey.

For those arriving by plane, the nearest airports are Manzanillo International Airport (ZLO) and Colima National Airport (CLQ). From Manzanillo, the trip to Playa Cuyutlán is about 45 minutes to an hour by car or taxi. If we land at Colima airport, as mentioned, the journey will be a bit longer, but just as accessible. We recommend renting a car to have the freedom to explore the surroundings at our own pace, although there are also public transport and taxi options available that can take us directly to the beach.

The Sand and Water

The most distinctive feature of Playa Cuyutlán is certainly its black sand. Walking barefoot on it, we notice it's fine and soft, with a particular feel that sets it apart from lighter sands. This dark color, a result of the region's volcanic activity, absorbs the sun's heat, so it's advisable to wear sandals during peak sun hours. The contrast of the intense black sand with the deep blue of the Pacific and the green of the surrounding vegetation creates a truly photogenic and memorable landscape.

As for the water, the waters of Playa Cuyutlán are warm and invite us for a refreshing swim. However, caution is important. Although the beach is ideal for relaxation and leisure, currents and waves can be strong at certain times of the year. The 'Green Wave' is another major attraction of Cuyutlán's water. In addition to restaurants, the beach has showers and bathrooms/WCs that are public or available at the establishments, allowing us to rinse off the sand and salt after a dip. For those arriving by car, there are parking areas along the coast, although they can fill up quickly during high season. It's important to highlight the presence of lifeguards, especially on weekends and during holiday periods, which gives us greater peace of mind when enjoying the waves. Despite not being a beach with large resorts, the warmth of its people and the availability of these services make Playa Cuyutlán a very welcoming and family-friendly destination.

Choosing the right time to visit Playa Cuyutlán can significantly influence our experience. Generally, the best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is predominantly sunny, with pleasant temperatures and less humidity. Rainfall is scarce, guaranteeing us perfect days to enjoy the sun and beach without interruptions. The waters are usually calmer, although we must always be mindful of the surf.
