Located in the state of Yucatan, Mexico, this beach is much more than just a sun and sand destination; it is a piece of living history, the epicenter of the impact that changed life on Earth millions of years ago. But far from any apocalyptic vestiges, today we find a paradise of calm waters and soft sands, perfect for those seeking an authentic and unpretentious getaway.

For us, visiting Playa Chicxulub is immersing oneself in the essence of Yucatecan coastal life. Do not expect large resorts or overwhelming crowds; here the pace is slow, the local people are friendly, and the beauty lies in its naturalness. It is a place where families find a safe refuge, where lovers of tranquility can disconnect, and where history is felt in every sea breeze. How to Get to Playa Chicxulub

Getting to Playa Chicxulub is quite simple, especially if we start from the Yucatecan capital, Merida. We always recommend renting a car for total freedom of movement, although there are also public transportation options. From Merida, the journey takes approximately 40-50 minutes, following federal highway 261 towards Progreso. Once in Progreso, the coastal road takes us directly to Chicxulub Puerto in another 15-20 minutes. The route is scenic and well-signposted, making the trip a pleasant part of the experience.

From Merida

• By car: Take the Merida-Progreso highway (federal 261). Before reaching Progreso, there are well-marked turnoffs towards Chicxulub. The trip takes between 40 and 50 minutes.
• By bus/collectivo: From downtown Merida, on Calle 60 between 65 and 67, colectivos and buses depart frequently for Progreso. Once in Progreso, you can take other colectivos or taxis that will take you directly to Chicxulub Puerto. It is an economical option, although less flexible.

From Cancun or Riviera Maya

If we are coming from more distant areas like Cancun or the Riviera Maya, the best option is to fly to Merida International Airport (MID) and from there follow the previous directions. Alternatively, you can drive on the toll highway (Merida-Cancun) which takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours, and then head to the coast.

The Sand and Water

When we think of Playa Chicxulub, the first thing that comes to mind is its characteristic sand. Here we find fine sand, of a light, almost white tone, mixed with small fragments of seashells. It is soft and pleasant to the touch, perfect for long barefoot walks along the shore or for the little ones to play building sandcastles. The general cleanliness of the beach is good, and the effort to keep it in optimal condition for the enjoyment of all visitors is noticeable.

As for the water, it is one of the biggest attractions of this Yucatan beach. The waters of the Gulf of Mexico in this area are notably calm, with very gentle waves, making it an ideal place for swimming, especially for children and the elderly. The color of the water is a mix of light greens and blues, and although it is not always as crystal clear as in the Caribbean due to mixing with Gulf sediments, its warmth and calm are unmatched. We love the feeling of security these waters provide, allowing us to relax completely while floating or simply cooling off under the Yucatecan sun. It is a true pleasure to dive into these serene waters, one of the reasons we consider Playa Chicxulub such a special destination.

Services and Facilities

Playa Chicxulub, being a developed coastal community, offers a good variety of services and facilities that make our stay more comfortable and pleasant. Although it is not a beach with massive tourist infrastructure, it has everything needed to enjoy a day or a complete vacation by the sea. We always appreciate when a beach has the basics well covered, and Chicxulub more than delivers.

Among the services we can find, the following stand out:

• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: Along the coast, especially in the central area of the port, there are numerous chiringuitos and small restaurants where we can taste delicious local food, mainly fresh seafood. It's ideal for lunch with sea views.
• Parking: Although there are not always designated and large parking lots, it is possible to find street parking near the beach. We always recommend arriving early, especially during high season, to secure a good spot.
• Lifeguards: During weekends and high season (summer holidays, Easter), there is usually a presence of lifeguards who watch over our safety, which always gives us extra peace of mind, especially if traveling with children.
• Bathrooms/WC: Many of the restaurants and chiringuitos offer bathroom facilities for their customers. There are also some public bathrooms, although their availability and condition may vary.
• Umbrellas and Sun Loungers: At various points on the beach, it is possible to rent umbrellas and sun loungers for the day, which is perfect for those who do not bring their own equipment and want to enjoy the sun in comfort.
