How to Get to Praia do Castelejo

Getting to Praia do Castelejo is part of the adventure. This beach, despite its growing popularity, maintains an air of exclusivity due to its somewhat remote location on the Vicentina Coast. The most comfortable and, in fact, almost indispensable way to access it is by car. From Faro, the provincial capital, the journey will take us approximately one hour and twenty minutes, covering about 100 kilometers. We will take the A22 (Via do Infante) west, towards Lagos, and then follow the signs to Sagres and Vila do Bispo.

Once near Vila do Bispo, the signage for Praia do Castelejo becomes more specific. The road, although paved, winds through rural landscapes and descends along a winding road that offers spectacular coastal views before reaching the beach. Don't worry, access is relatively straightforward and the parking, although not huge, usually has enough space, especially outside the peak season. During the summer months, it is advisable to arrive early to secure a good spot.

For those staying in closer areas like Sagres or Vila do Bispo, the journey is much shorter, just 10-15 minutes by car. From Lagos, a vibrant and popular city, the trip will take about 30-40 minutes. It is important to consider that public transport to this beach is practically non-existent, which underscores the need for a private vehicle or a taxi/private transport service. The freedom offered by a car will also allow us to explore the wonderful surroundings and other nearby beaches in Portugal, making our visit a much richer and more complete experience.

The Sand and Water

Praia do Castelejo welcomes us with an extensive stretch of golden sand, with a fine texture pleasant to the touch, stretching for about 450 meters, especially generous during low tide. This sand, under the Algarve sun, takes on tones ranging from soft cream to intense gold, inviting us to walk barefoot and feel the warmth under our feet. The predominant ground type is, without a doubt, sand, although at the ends of the beach and at low tide, it is possible to find some rock formations that add character to the landscape and are perfect for exploring small natural pools that form between the rocks.

The Atlantic water at Praia do Castelejo is, as one would expect on this wild coast, notably fresh and invigorating. Its clarity is generally exceptional, allowing us to see the sandy bottom and, sometimes, some rocks covered in seaweed. However, its temperature is considerably lower than that of the beaches in the southern Algarve, a characteristic that many appreciate, especially in the hot summer months. This freshness is part of its charm and helps us feel renewed and revitalized.

But what truly defines the character of the water at Castelejo are its waves. This beach is a paradise for surfers, with constant and powerful swell that attracts enthusiasts of this sport of all levels. The waves break with force, creating ideal conditions for surfing and bodyboarding. Even if we are not surfers, the sight of the waves crashing against the shore and the imposing cliffs is a hypnotic spectacle that keeps us entertained for hours.
