How to Get to Praia de Carcavelos

Getting to Praia de Carcavelos is surprisingly simple, making it a very attractive option for those visiting Lisbon and wanting to enjoy a day at the sea without complications. We, on our multiple visits, have verified the excellent connectivity of this beach with the capital and its surroundings.

By Train

The most comfortable and popular way to get there is undoubtedly by train. The CP (Comboios de Portugal) Cascais line is direct and leaves us just a few minutes' walk from the sand. If you're coming from Lisbon, you just need to take the train at Cais do Sodré station and get off at Carcavelos station. The journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes and offers beautiful views of the coast. The train frequency is very good, especially in high season, allowing us to plan our day with total flexibility.

By Bus

Several bus lines operate in the area, connecting Carcavelos with nearby municipalities like Oeiras, Cascais, or Sintra. While the train is more direct from Lisbon, the bus can be a good option if you're staying in one of these neighboring towns. The stops are usually well signposted and a short distance from the beach, facilitating access for all visitors.

By Car

If you prefer the comfort of your own vehicle, Praia de Carcavelos is accessible via the A5 or the Avenida Marginal (N6). The N6, in particular, is a scenic road that runs along the coast and offers spectacular views. However, in high season and on weekends, parking can be a challenge. There are paid parking lots near the beach, but they tend to fill up quickly. The waters of Praia de Carcavelos are, as is usual on the Portuguese Atlantic coast, cool and revitalizing. Their color, between blue and emerald, is crystalline and invites us for a dip. The beach usually holds the Blue Flag distinction, a recognition of the excellent water quality and services it offers, giving us additional peace of mind knowing we are in a clean and safe environment.

Although the Atlantic can be known for its currents, in Carcavelos conditions are usually quite stable, with waves that are ideal for surfing and other water sports, but that are not usually excessively dangerous for recreational bathing.
