How to Get to Playa de Vilun

Getting to Playa de Vilun is relatively straightforward, especially if traveling from the city of Shkodra, the main urban center of the region. We recommend a car as the most comfortable and flexible option, as it will allow you to explore the surroundings at your own pace. From Shkodra, the journey to Velipojë and, by extension, to Vilun, is approximately 30-40 kilometers and takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic and road conditions. The roads are generally in good condition and well-signposted, making navigation easy.

By Car

• From Shkodra: Take the main road heading west towards Velipojë. Once in Velipojë, follow the signs south, skirting the coast, until you reach the Vilun area. There are parking areas, often informal but sufficient, near the beach.

By Public Transport

Although a car is ideal, it's also possible to reach Velipojë by bus from Shkodra. There are regular services during the high season. Once in the center of Velipojë, you can take a local taxi or, if the distance allows and you enjoy walking, head on foot towards Playa de Vilun, which is located a bit further south of the main Velipojë hub. Please note that bus schedules may be less frequent outside the high season.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Vilun welcomes us with a considerable stretch of sand, predominantly fine and of a light grayish tone, very common in this part of the Albanian Adriatic coast. It's sand that feels pleasant to the touch and is perfect for building sandcastles with the little ones or simply for lying down and relaxing in the sun. The beach is wide, ensuring that even on the busiest days, you'll always find a spot for yourselves without feeling overwhelmed.

As for the water, it's one of the biggest attractions of Playa de Vilun. The Adriatic waters here are generally calm and shallow near the shore, making them ideal for swimming, especially for families with children. The water temperature is very pleasant during the summer months, inviting long dips and carefree enjoyment. The confluence with the Buna River may slightly affect the clarity in certain spots, but overall, we find a clean sea suitable for enjoyment, a true balm for body and mind.

• Sun umbrellas and sun loungers: During the season, several local operators offer rentals of sun umbrellas and comfortable sun loungers, perfect for sun protection and enjoying a well-deserved rest.
• Beach bars (chiringuitos) and restaurants: There's a good selection of beach bars and small restaurants directly on the beach or very close to it. Here you can enjoy refreshing drinks, ice cream, snacks, and local cuisine dishes, many featuring fresh fish of the day. We love the possibility of having lunch with sea views.
• Parking: While not always organized, paid parking lots, you'll find designated areas or informal spaces to leave your car near the beach. During the high season, it's advisable to arrive early to secure a good spot.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: For added comfort, the beach has public showers to rinse off salt and sand, as well as toilet and WC facilities, which are essential for any beach day.
• Lifeguards: During the summer months, and especially in the busier areas, there are lifeguards ensuring the safety of swimmers. This gives us great peace of mind, especially when traveling with children.

Best Time to Visit

For us, the best time to visit Playa de Vilun and the Albanian coast in general is during the summer months, from June to September. It is during this period when
