Introduction

Located in the sunny province of Guanacaste, this beach welcomes us with a uniqueness that distinguishes it from any other in the world: its sand, or rather, its blanket of millions of tiny crushed seashells, worn down by the incessant ebb and flow of the ocean. The absence of dark volcanic sand, so common in other Guanacaste beaches, gifts us a panorama of whites and pale pinks that contrast wonderfully with the turquoise and crystal-clear waters of the Pacific.

How to Get to Playa Conchal

Getting to Playa Conchal is part of the adventure and, fortunately, it is quite accessible. The main gateway for most international visitors is the Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, the capital of Guanacaste. From there, we have several options to reach this coastal paradise.

From Liberia Airport (LIR)

• Car rental: This is, for us, the most recommended option if we wish to explore the region at our own pace. The journey from Liberia to Playa Conchal is approximately one hour, covering about 60 kilometers. The route is straightforward and well-signposted, mainly on paved roads. A 4x4 vehicle is not strictly necessary to reach the beach itself, but it can be useful if we plan to venture onto secondary roads or visit nearby national parks. Major car rental companies operate directly at the airport.
• Private or shared shuttle services: For those who prefer not to drive, there are numerous companies offering direct transfers from the airport to hotels in Playa Conchal or its surroundings. It is a comfortable and stress-free option, especially if we are traveling in a group or with a lot of luggage. Prices vary depending on the type of service (private or shared) and the number of passengers. We always recommend booking in advance, especially during the high season.
• Taxi: Authorized taxis are available at the airport. It is a more expensive option than a shared shuttle, but it offers the flexibility of a direct service. Be sure to agree on the price before starting the journey.

From Other Locations in Costa Rica

If we are already in other parts of Costa Rica, such as San José or La Fortuna, we can opt for domestic flights to Liberia airport, public buses (which require more transfers and patience), or, again, renting a car. The road infrastructure in Guanacaste has improved significantly, making land travel easier. Once in the area, the public entrance to Playa Conchal is through the town of Brasilito, a picturesque fishing village adjacent to the beach. It is important to consider that access to the beach through the resorts may be restricted for non-guests, so access via Brasilito is the most common and guaranteed route for everyone.

The Sand and the Water

What truly distinguishes Playa Conchal and elevates it to an almost mythical status among Costa Rica beaches is its sand. But is it really sand? When we talk about Playa Conchal, we are talking about a completely different tactile and visual experience. Here, the ground is not the typical dark volcanic or golden sand found on many other Guanacaste beaches. Instead, we find a bed of millions of tiny seashells, meticulously polished and crushed by the ocean over eons. The result is a surprisingly smooth surface with a color ranging from pearly white, pale pink, to beige, which shines intensely under the tropical sun.

Walking barefoot on this 'sand' is a delight. It does not heat up as much as conventional sand, allowing us to enjoy long walks without worrying about burning our feet. The sound the shells make when stepped on is a constant whisper, a natural melody accompanying the sea breeze. It is a feature that makes it incredibly photogenic, offering a unique backdrop for any image.

As for the water, expectations are equally exceeded. The waters of Playa Conchal are famous for their transparency and their impressive hues ranging from aquamarine to deep turquoise. This exceptional clarity is due, in part, to the nature of its seabed and the protection offered by nearby rock formations, which act as natural barriers against strong currents and sediment. They are remarkably calm and warm waters, making them the perfect place for swimming, floating, and enjoying a relaxing bath.
