And let us tell you, Playa Sámara, in the heart of Guanacaste, Costa Rica, is precisely one of those magical places. This jewel of the Pacific coast captivates us with its relaxed atmosphere, its serene waters, and its vibrant community. It's a destination that attracts a charming mix of travelers, from families with young children to couples seeking romance and solo adventurers longing to disconnect.

Sámara is not your typical party beach or a massive resort. Its charm lies in its authenticity, its leisurely pace, and the warmth of its people. Here, time seems to slow down, inviting us to enjoy every moment, whether under the shade of a palm tree, swimming in its calm waters, or exploring the rich biodiversity that surrounds it. It's one of those Guanacaste beaches that stays etched in your soul, offering a perfect combination of natural beauty, gentle adventure, and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere.

How to Get to Playa Sámara

Getting to Playa Sámara is part of the adventure, and fortunately, there are several options for all tastes and budgets. The most common way for international visitors is to fly into Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, which is about a two-hour drive away. From there, we have several alternatives:

From Liberia Airport (LIR)

• Car rental: This is, without a doubt, the option we most recommend if you want to explore the surroundings at your own pace. The main roads are in good condition, although some secondary stretches to other beaches or attractions may be gravel. A 4x4 SUV is not strictly necessary to get to Sámara, but it can be useful if you plan off-the-beaten-path adventures. The journey is scenic, passing through rural Guanacaste landscapes.
• Private or shared shuttle service: Several companies offer this service, which can be an excellent option if you prefer the convenience of being picked up directly at the airport and dropped off at your accommodation's door. It's more expensive than the public bus, but much more convenient.
• Public bus: It's the most economical option, but also the one that requires the most time and patience. From Liberia, you would need to take a bus to Nicoya and then another bus to Sámara. It's a good way to immerse yourself in the local culture, although it's not the most practical with a lot of luggage.

From San José

• Car rental: Similar to the option from Liberia, the route is mainly via the Inter-American Highway, which is in excellent condition.
• Public bus: The Alfaro company offers direct services from San José to Sámara, which is a very popular option among locals and budget travelers. The buses are comfortable and offer a relaxed way to see the country.
• Domestic flights: You can also take a domestic flight from San José to Nosara Airport (NOB), which is about a 30-40 minute drive from Sámara. It's the fastest option, although also the most expensive. Sansa and Aerobell airlines operate these routes.

Once in Sámara

The town of Sámara is small enough that we can get around on foot without any problems. However, to explore nearby beaches like Playa Carrillo or for excursions, a car, a motorbike, or even a bicycle are very useful. Taxis and local 'tuk-tuks' are also available for short trips.

The Sand and Water

One of the most distinctive aspects of Playa Sámara is, without a doubt, its sand and waters. We always highlight the particularity of this beach compared to other Costa Rica beaches.

The Sand

The sand of Sámara is a light, almost golden hue, with a fine and soft texture, making it incredibly pleasant to walk on barefoot. It stretches for approximately 3.5 kilometers, forming a perfect crescent that invites long morning or sunset walks. It's the kind of sand that feels good between your toes, ideal for building sandcastles with children or simply for lying back and sunbathing. Unlike some volcanic beaches in Costa Rica that have darker, coarser sand, Sámara's is a delight for our feet.

The Water

The waters of Playa Sámara are, perhaps, its greatest attraction, especially for families and those seeking a calm swim. They are protected by a coral reef in the bay, which creates a natural pool of warm, shallow, and very calm waters. The absence of strong currents and large waves makes it an exceptionally safe place to swim, even for the little ones. It's one of the few Guanacaste beaches where we can completely relax knowing our children are safe splashing in the shallows.

The water clarity varies depending on the time of year and the tides, but it is generally clear and inviting, with tones ranging from aquamarine to deep blue. The water temperature is consistently warm, allowing us to enjoy long swims without feeling cold. It's perfect for a refreshing dip after a yoga session or for simply floating and letting yourself be carried by the serenity of the surroundings. The underwater visibility, although not world-class for deep diving, is sufficient for snorkeling near the reef, where we can observe colorful fish and other marine creatures.
