How to Get to Playa Uvita

Getting to Playa Uvita is part of the adventure and, fortunately, quite accessible from the main entry points to Costa Rica. If you are traveling from San José, the capital, the most common route is to take Route 27 towards Caldera, then continue on the Costanera Sur (Route 34) towards Dominical and Ojochal. The journey takes approximately 3 to 4 hours by car, offering landscapes ranging from mountains to the Pacific coast. We recommend renting a 4x4 vehicle, especially if you plan to explore the surroundings or visit during the rainy season, although the main road is in excellent condition.

Transportation Options

• Rental car: This is the most flexible and recommended option. It allows you to explore at your own pace and access nearby attractions. There are several rental agencies at the international airports in San José (SJO) and Liberia (LIR).
• Public bus: This is an economical alternative. There are direct services from San José to Uvita. Although slower, it offers an authentic local experience. The stops are conveniently located near the beach access points.
• Shared or private shuttle: For those seeking comfort without driving, shuttle services are an excellent option. They pick you up directly at the airport or your hotel and take you to your accommodation in Uvita, offering a balance between cost and comfort.

The Sand and Water

When we step onto Playa Uvita, the first thing we notice is its sand, ranging from golden to light brown in tone, with a texture we could describe as mixed; it is not extremely fine, but not coarse either, making it comfortable for walking barefoot and perfect for spreading out our towel and relaxing. Along the coast, especially in the 'whale tail' area, the sand mixes with shell fragments and small volcanic rocks, adding character to the landscape and providing interesting elements to explore during walks.

The Pacific waters at Playa Uvita are, in general, warm and welcoming, with pleasant temperatures year-round. They are usually calm, especially near the 'whale tail' area and at low tide, making it a safe and fun place to swim. However, it is important to pay attention to the tides, as the 'whale tail' formation is only visible and accessible during low tide. When the tide rises, much of the beach is covered, and currents can be stronger, so we always recommend checking tide tables and following the instructions of lifeguards. Water clarity varies, but on good days, it is excellent for snorkeling, especially around the rocky reefs that form the base of the 'whale tail,' where marine life abounds.

As part of a National Park, Playa Uvita offers a combination of basic services managed by the park and a wide range of commercial options just outside its boundaries, in the town of Uvita. We find an infrastructure that seeks to balance conservation with visitor comfort.

Within the Marino Ballena National Park, specifically at the main entrances like the Sector Bahía Uvita, you can find:

• Bathrooms/WC: Clean and well-maintained sanitary facilities.
• Showers: Simple cold-water showers to rinse off sand and salt after a swim.
• Parking: Monitored parking areas, although with an additional cost to the park entrance fee.
• Lifeguards: A team of lifeguards is present to ensure the safety of swimmers, especially in the most popular areas.
