Introduction
Welcome to one of the Adriatic's best-kept secrets! When we think of Croatian beaches, our minds often conjure images of white pebble coves and turquoise waters. And while these are undoubtedly beautiful, Playa de Saplunara on the enchanting island of Mljet offers a completely different and, we might say, refreshing experience: sand. Yes, you read that right, sand. This feature alone makes it a rarity and a coveted destination on the Dalmatian coast.
Located at the southeastern tip of Mljet Island, in the Dubrovnik-Neretva region, Saplunara is not a single beach, but a collection of three shallow, protected sandy bays: Velika Saplunara, Mala Saplunara, and Blaca (also known as Limuni). This trio of sandy paradises is surrounded by a dense pine forest, creating a natural and pristine backdrop that invites total disconnection. It's a place where time seems to stand still, where the sound of the waves and the song of the cicadas are the only soundtrack, and where the stress of modern life dissolves with every step on its soft sand. For us, it is the epitome of tranquility and natural beauty, a true refuge for the soul.
What captivates us most about Playa de Saplunara is its authenticity. You won't find large resorts or overwhelming crowds here, but a relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere that makes it perfect for those seeking a genuine escape. It's a destination that attracts both families with young children, who enjoy its shallow and safe waters, and couples looking for a romantic spot or solo travelers eager to connect with nature. It is, without a doubt, one of the Dubrovnik-Neretva beaches that deserves a prominent place in any Croatia itinerary.
How to Get to Playa de Saplunara
Getting to Playa de Saplunara is part of the adventure and charm of visiting it, as it is located on the island of Mljet, one of the jewels of the Croatian Adriatic. For us, the journey itself is an opportunity to enjoy the stunning maritime landscapes and the serenity of the islands.
The first step is to get to the island of Mljet. The most common way is by ferry. If you're coming from the historic city of Dubrovnik, you can take a passenger catamaran that will take you directly to Pomena or Polače, on Mljet. This service is usually seasonal and faster, but does not allow vehicle transport. If you plan to bring your car, the best option is to take a ferry from Prapratno, on the Pelješac peninsula, to Sobra, on Mljet. Prapratno is easily accessible by car from Dubrovnik.
Once on the island of Mljet, whether you arrive in Sobra, Pomena, or Polače, you will need to head to the southeastern tip of the island, where Saplunara is located. If you've brought your car on the ferry, the journey is relatively straightforward. There is a main road that runs across the island and will take you directly to the Saplunara area. The trip from Sobra, the main car arrival port, takes about 30-40 minutes, offering panoramic views of the island landscape.
For those without their own vehicle, the options are somewhat more limited but not impossible. There is a local bus service on Mljet that connects the main villages and the national park. However, schedules can be infrequent, especially outside the high season. Another alternative is to take a taxi from the arrival port to Saplunara, although this can be more expensive. For us, the freedom of a car (whether your own or rented on the mainland) is ideal for exploring Mljet at our own pace and ensuring we get to Playa de Saplunara without a hitch, also allowing us to discover other hidden corners of the island.
The Sand and the Water
The true star of Playa de Saplunara is, certainly, its sand. In a country where Croatian beaches are predominantly pebble or rock, finding a stretch of sand as fine and soft as Saplunara's is a true revelation. For us, this feature elevates it to a special status, different from any other we've visited in the Dubrovnik-Neretva region.
Walking barefoot on Saplunara, the feeling of the sand under our feet is pure delight. It's a pale golden color, almost white in some spots, and so fine that it slips between your toes with amazing ease. This quality of sand not only makes it incredibly comfortable for lying down and relaxing, but it's also perfect for building sandcastles, an activity that both children and adults equally enjoy. Forget flip-flops or water shoes; here, all you need is the freedom to feel the earth under your feet.
But the magic of Saplunara doesn't end with its sand. The waters that bathe these bays are simply spectacular. Of a crystal-clear turquoise color, their transparency is such that you can see the seabed with amazing clarity, even several meters deep. What impresses us most is how incredibly calm and shallow they are, especially in Velika Saplunara and Mala Saplunara. The water descends very gently, allowing you to walk a good distance out to sea before it fully covers you. This feature makes it a paradise for families with young children, who can play and splash in complete safety.
The water temperature in the summer months is another of its great advantages. It warms up quickly due to the shallowness and protection of the bays, offering a warm and comforting swim that invites you to stay in the sea for hours. For us, the combination of the fine sand and the shallow, warm, and crystal-clear waters of Playa de Saplunara creates an idyllic atmosphere.
