How to Get to Playa de Sahara

Getting to Playa de Sahara is part of the adventure and gradually immerses us in its relaxed atmosphere. First, to reach Rab Island, the most common way is to take a ferry from Stinica on the mainland to Mišnjak in southern Rab. The crossing is short and picturesque, offering us the first glimpses of the beautiful archipelago. Once on Rab, we head north, specifically to the Lopar peninsula, where our beach is located.

From Lopar, access to Playa de Sahara is on foot or by boat. The land option involves leaving the car in a nearby, usually signposted, parking lot and then embarking on a 15 to 20-minute walk along a well-marked trail. This walk, surrounded by pines and with sea views, is a charming prelude that prepares us for the serenity that awaits. For those who prefer a more direct and perhaps more exclusive arrival, small boats can be rented or water taxis hired from Lopar, which will drop us off directly on the shore of this wonderful Primorje-Gorski Kotar beach.

The Sand and Water

One of the most notable features of Playa de Sahara is, without a doubt, its sand. Here, we find fine and soft sand, of a pale golden hue that invites us to walk barefoot and lay out a towel without worry. Unlike many Croatian beaches that are pebbly or rocky, Sahara delights us with a sandy bed that extends both on the shore and underwater, making it exceptionally comfortable and attractive for all visitors.

The waters of the Adriatic in this area are a spectacle in themselves. At Playa de Sahara, we encounter a sea of translucent turquoise blue, so clear that we can easily see the seabed. Furthermore, the depth is gradual and very shallow in the first few meters, making it an extremely safe and pleasant place for swimming. The water temperature during the summer months is deliciously refreshing, ideal for combating the heat and enjoying long dips. It's a perfect combination of soft sand and pristine water that invites total relaxation.

Services and Facilities

We must be honest: Playa de Sahara is not a beach that stands out for a vast range of services and facilities. In fact, its charm lies precisely in its more wild and less developed character. Here, nature is the protagonist, and services are minimalist to preserve that authenticity. Don't expect to find massive tourist infrastructure, which is, for many of us, a great relief.

What we can find is a small chiringuito or drinks stand, which usually offers soft drinks, beers, and perhaps some basic snacks, perfect for quenching thirst under the Croatian sun. Parking is available at a certain distance, as already mentioned, requiring a walk. Beyond this, there are no public showers, permanent toilets, lifeguards, or beach-managed umbrella or sunbed rentals. We strongly recommend bringing your own umbrella, towels, sunscreen, and enough water and provisions for the day. The idea is to enjoy the beach as it is, in a natural setting without major artifices.

Best Time to Visit

For us, choosing the right time to visit Playa de Sahara is crucial to fully enjoy its charm. The high season in Croatia, and therefore on Rab Island, spans the months of July and August. During this period, the weather is warm and sunny, ideal for swimming and sunbathing, but it's also when the beach receives the highest number of visitors. Although Playa de Sahara is extensive, it can feel more crowded during these central weeks of summer.

Our personal recommendation for those seeking a more tranquil and relaxed experience is to opt for the shoulder season months: late May, June, or early September. In June and September, the weather is still splendid, water temperatures are pleasant, and the influx of tourists is considerably lower. This allows us to enjoy the beach with more space and serenity, better appreciating its nudist and wild atmosphere. May and October also offer beauty, but water temperatures may be too cool for prolonged swimming, although they are perfect for walks and enjoying the landscape of the Croatian beaches in calm.
