Its name couldn't be more fitting: the waters shine with emerald and turquoise hues, inviting us to immerse ourselves in a Caribbean paradise. Located on the northern coast of Holguín province, this beach is a favorite destination for those seeking a perfect combination of natural beauty, tranquility, and excellent tourist services.

Flanked by lush tropical vegetation and protected by a coral reef, Playa Esmeralda offers an idyllic setting for an unforgettable vacation. It's a corner of Cuba where time seems to stand still, allowing us to disconnect and fully enjoy the sun, sea, and breeze. Its serene atmosphere and crystal-clear waters make it one of the most coveted Holguín beaches, a true refuge for the soul.

How to Get to Playa Esmeralda

Getting to Playa Esmeralda is relatively easy, especially if we fly into Frank País International Airport (HOG) in Holguín. From there, the beach is about an hour's drive away, approximately 70 kilometers. We recommend arranging a private transfer or using the taxi services available at the airport. Many of the area's resorts also offer direct transfers for their guests, which is the most comfortable option.

If we're coming from the city of Holguín, we can opt for a private taxi or a rental car. The road is in good condition and the journey offers interesting views of the Cuban landscape. Although there is no direct public transportation that drops us off right at the beach, the network of taxis and transfer services greatly facilitates access to this paradisiacal corner of Cuba beaches.

The Sand and Water

The most distinctive feature of Playa Esmeralda is, without a doubt, its sand and waters. The sand is immaculately white, fine and soft to the touch, inviting us to walk barefoot and feel its coolness under our feet. It's the kind of sand that doesn't get excessively hot under the Caribbean sun, making it perfect for long walks along the shore.

But it's the water that truly captivates us. Its hues range from the most vibrant turquoise blue to a deep emerald green, creating a stunning visual spectacle. The waters are incredibly crystal clear and warm, with an ideal temperature for swimming year-round. Thanks to the protection of the nearby coral reef, the waves are gentle and the current is minimal, making it a very safe and pleasant Holguín beach for all ages. The underwater visibility is excellent, perfect for observing marine life even without diving equipment.

Best Time to Visit

For us, the best time to visit Playa Esmeralda and Holguín beaches in general is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During these months, the weather is cooler and drier, with pleasant temperatures around 25-30°C and less chance of rain. The mornings and sunsets are particularly spectacular during this time.

The rainy season extends from May to October, also coinciding with the hurricane season (June to November). Although the rains usually come in the form of short, intense tropical downpours, and it doesn't rain every day, the risk of storms and hurricanes is higher. While prices may be lower in the low season, we prefer the tranquility of the dry season to guarantee days of uninterrupted sun on this beautiful Holguín beach.

Activities and Sports

Playa Esmeralda is much more than a place to sunbathe; it offers a wide variety of activities to keep us entertained. Its calm, clear waters are ideal for:
