How to Get to Playa Larga

Getting to Playa Larga is part of the adventure, and we will guide you through the best options. Given its location on the Zapata Peninsula, it's a reasonable distance from some of the main entry points to Cuba. If you land in Havana, the journey is approximately 2.5 to 3 hours by car, covering about 180 kilometers. From Varadero, another popular tourist destination, the trip is even shorter, around 1.5 to 2 hours, about 100 kilometers.

Transportation Options

• Rental Car: For us, this is the most recommended option if you want to explore the area at your own pace. The main roads are in acceptable condition, although you always have to watch out for potholes or animals on the road. It will give you the freedom to stop at any moment and discover hidden corners.
• Private Taxi: This is a comfortable and direct option, although more expensive. You can negotiate the price with taxi drivers at airports or in cities. It's ideal if you're traveling in a group and want to avoid the complications of public transport.
• Viazul Bus: If you're looking for a more economical option, Viazul offers routes from Havana and Varadero to Playa Larga or nearby Playa Girón. The buses are comfortable, with air conditioning, although the schedules may be less flexible and the trip longer due to intermediate stops.
• Colectivos or 'Shared Taxis': A popular alternative among travelers seeking a balance between price and comfort. These are cars that cover fixed routes, sharing the cost among several passengers. Ask at your accommodation or at bus stations to find one.

The Sand and Water

The main attraction of any Matanzas beach is, without a doubt, its sand and sea, and Playa Larga does not disappoint. Stepping onto the shore, you'll find fine, soft sand, of a whitish tone that contrasts wonderfully with the vibrant turquoise blue of the Caribbean. It's perfect sand for walking barefoot, building sandcastles with the little ones, or simply spreading out a towel and enjoying the sun.

But what really distinguishes the waters of Playa Larga is their exceptional calmness. Protected by the Bay of Pigs, the sea here is like a natural pool: warm, crystal clear, and with very little wave action. This makes it an ideal place for swimming in complete safety, even for children or those who don't feel very comfortable in open water. It's an experience we highly recommend, even if you're a beginner, as there are dive centers that offer guided dives and courses for all levels.

The water temperature at Playa Larga remains pleasant year-round, around 26-30°C, inviting you to spend hours submerged, enjoying the freshness and beauty of this Caribbean corner. It is, certainly, one of the natural treasures of Cuban beaches.

Although Playa Larga is not a luxury destination with large resorts, it does offer a good range of services and facilities that make the stay very comfortable and pleasant. We always appreciate the authenticity and warmth of the local services, which are abundant here.

• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: Along the beach and in the small town, you'll find numerous chiringuitos and small restaurants, locally known as paladares. Here you can taste delicious Cuban cuisine, with a special emphasis on fresh fish and seafood. We encourage you to try
