Playa del Arenal in Javea, Alicante, is undoubtedly one of the most precious jewels of the Costa Blanca. We know it well and can assure you it's a destination that has everything for an unforgettable holiday. Unlike the numerous rocky coves that characterise Javea's coast, El Arenal stands out as its only sandy beach, making it a magnet for families and anyone seeking the comfort of soft sand and gentle waters.

Its protected bay shape, with shallow waters and a gentle slope, makes it exceptionally safe and pleasant for children, allowing us adults to relax while they enjoy themselves worry-free. But El Arenal is much more than a family beach; it's a vibrant hub of activity with a bustling, lively promenade where gastronomy, leisure, and a great atmosphere come together from dawn until late at night. It's the perfect place to combine days of sun and sea with nights of fun and good food, and that's why we highly recommend it.

How to Get to Playa del Arenal

Getting to Playa del Arenal is quite straightforward, given its privileged and well-signposted location in Javea.

By Car

If we come by car, the most common way, we can access Javea via the AP-7 (exit 62 Ondara/Dénia) or the N-332. Once in Javea, the signs for 'El Arenal' are clear. The beach has parking areas on the streets adjacent to the promenade, although in high season it can be a challenge to find a free spot. There are also some paid car parks. Our recommendation is to arrive early if you visit in July or August to secure a good spot.

By Public Transport

From Javea's town centre or other areas of the municipality, there are local bus lines that connect directly to Playa del Arenal. If you arrive at Alicante or Valencia airport, you can take an intercity bus to Dénia and from there another bus to Javea. It's a slower option, but comfortable if you don't want to drive.

On Foot or by Bicycle

For those staying nearby or in other areas of Javea, such as the Port or the Old Town, the beach is accessible on foot or by bicycle via the cycle path and promenades that connect the different areas of the town. It's a fantastic way to enjoy the scenery and stay active.

The Sand and Water

One of the main attractions of Playa del Arenal is undoubtedly its fine, golden sand. We really value this feature, especially when we go with children, as it's perfect for building sandcastles, playing, and simply relaxing without the discomfort of stones. It's soft to the touch and stretches for almost 500 metres, offering ample space for all bathers.

The waters of El Arenal are another of its great strengths. They are notably calm, crystal clear, and, most importantly, very shallow at the shoreline. This is because the beach is located in a protected bay, which minimises waves and creates a safe, peaceful environment for swimming. The water temperature is usually very pleasant during the summer months, inviting long swims and refreshing dips. The water quality is constantly monitored, and the beach often holds the Blue Flag, a distinction that certifies excellence in water quality, environmental management, safety, and services. This gives us extra peace of mind when choosing it as our leisure spot.

The choice of the best time to visit Playa del Arenal in Javea depends a lot on what we're looking for in our experience. We've been at different times of the year and can give you a complete perspective.

Summer (June-September)

Undoubtedly, summer is the busiest season. The months of July and August are the warmest and most crowded, with temperatures easily exceeding 30°C and the sea water at its most pleasant. It's the ideal time if we're looking for a lively atmosphere, with the promenade full of life, beach bars in full swing, and a great range of activities. However, it also means the beach will be quite full, and finding parking or a spot on the sand can be more difficult. If you go in summer, we recommend going early in the morning or late in the afternoon to enjoy more tranquillity.

Spring (April-May) and Early Autumn (September-October)

For us, these are the ideal months for those seeking to enjoy Playa del Arenal with a more relaxed atmosphere but equally splendid weather. The temperatures are mild and pleasant, perfect for walking, sunbathing, and swimming without the oppressive heat or summer crowds. The sea water still retains a very pleasant temperature in September and early October. The beach services are still operational but with fewer visitors, allowing for a calmer, more authentic experience.

Winter (November-March)

During the winter months, Playa del Arenal takes on a much more serene atmosphere. The climate remains mild compared to other regions of Europe, with many sunny days, but swimming in the sea is only for the brave. It's a fantastic time for long walks along the promenade, enjoying the tranquillity, doing outdoor sports, or sitting on a terrace enjoying a coffee in the sun. Many restaurants and beach bars remain open, albeit with reduced hours. It's perfect if we're looking for disconnection and peace.

In summary, if you're looking for hustle and bustle and activity, summer is your time. If you prefer tranquillity and perfect weather to enjoy without crowds, spring and early autumn are, without a doubt, our favourite times to visit Playa del Arenal.

Thanks to its calm, protected waters, El Arenal is ideal for starting or practising various water sports:

• Paddle Surf (SUP): Very popular, and boards can be rented at several points on the beach. The calm waters are perfect for gliding on the board.
• Kayaking: Another excellent option for exploring the nearby coast, especially towards the south where small coves are found.
• Windsurfing and Kitesurfing: Although conditions aren't always optimal for the most experienced, days with a bit of wind are ideal for learning or practising these sports.
• Snorkelling: Although it's not an area with spectacular reefs, the clarity of the water allows for observing small fish near the shore and in the rocky areas close to the ends of the beach.
• Jet Skiing: There are companies offering jet ski rentals and guided tours.

Activities on the Sand

• Beach Volleyball: It's common to see volleyball nets set up on the sand, and there are always people willing to have a game.
• Beach Football: Especially outside peak hours or in less crowded areas.
