When we think of beaches in Almería, we often picture the arid landscapes and turquoise waters of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. However, the easternmost part of the province, bordering Murcia, holds treasures like this beach in Pulpí. El Calipso is a modest-sized cove, about 150 meters long, characterized by its fine, golden sand and incredibly transparent waters that invite swimming and snorkeling. It's a place where time seems to stand still, where the sound of the waves is the only soundtrack, and where sunsets paint the sky with spectacular colors.

How to Get to Playa de El Calipso

Getting to Playa de El Calipso is relatively straightforward, although it requires a private vehicle, as public transport does not go directly to the cove. From the town center of Pulpí, the drive takes about 15-20 minutes, following signs towards San Juan de los Terreros and then turning off towards the cove area. If coming from San Juan de los Terreros, access is even quicker, just a 5-10 minute drive.

Access and Parking

We always recommend using a GPS navigator for the final directions, as access to these more secluded coves can have less obvious signage. Once nearby, we will find informal Parking areas on the roadside or small cleared dirt areas near the beach. It's important to park responsibly, without obstructing the road or invading protected areas. During the summer months, especially on weekends, these areas can fill up, so we advise arriving early to secure a good spot. From the parking area, access to the sand is short and easy, via a well-marked path, making it comfortable even if we're loaded with beach gear.

The Sand and the Water

The main feature that captivates us about Playa de El Calipso is, without a doubt, its perfect combination of sand and water. The sand is fine and golden, very pleasant to the touch and perfect for lying down to enjoy the sun. We won't find large rocks or pebbles on the shore, making it very comfortable for walking barefoot and for children, who can play and build sandcastles without any problems. It's a pleasure to feel it underfoot while walking along the shore.

The Transparency of the Mediterranean

As for the water, it is simply spectacular. We are met with crystal-clear waters of an intense turquoise color that immediately invite a swim. Underwater visibility is excellent, making El Calipso an ideal place for snorkeling. The entry into the sea is gentle and gradual, without sudden drops, which is a plus for families with children or people who don't feel entirely confident in deep water. The water temperature, especially in summer and early autumn, is very pleasant, allowing for prolonged and refreshing swims. The absence of strong currents and its condition as a cove protected by small rocky promontories contribute to its waters being generally very calm, almost like a natural swimming pool.

Services and Facilities

As we've already mentioned, Playa de El Calipso is a cove of a more natural character and, therefore, does not have extensive service infrastructure directly on the sand. This is precisely what gives it part of its charm and tranquility. However, we are not completely devoid of comforts, as in the vicinity, especially in San Juan de los Terreros or the Mar de Pulpí urbanization, we will find everything we need.

Available and Nearby Services

Directly on the beach, the most relevant service we can highlight is the informal Parking, which facilitates vehicle access. This is crucial, as it allows us to bring our own umbrellas, towels, coolers, and everything needed for a perfect day. We won't find showers or public toilets on the sand, so we advise being prepared and using the facilities of nearby establishments before or after our visit. There is also no lifeguard service, so caution is key when swimming, especially with children. However, as the waters are calm, the risk is lower, but we must always be alert. For those looking for Chiringuitos or restaurants, they will find them a short distance away in San Juan de los Terreros, where they can enjoy a good meal with sea views after a day at the beach.

Best Time to Visit

From our experience, Playa de El Calipso is enjoyable for much of the year, but there are times that stand out above others to get the most out of it. The choice will largely depend on what we are looking for: absolute tranquility or a more lively atmosphere with optimal temperatures.
