Introduction
If there is one beach that embodies the essence of the wild and pristine beauty of the Almería coast, that is, without a doubt, Playa de los Muertos. Located in the municipality of Carboneras, within the stunning Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, this gem is much more than a simple stretch of sand and pebbles; it is an icon, a pilgrimage destination for those seeking the purest connection with the Mediterranean.
We, as beach tourism experts, have visited countless coves and beaches, but Playa de los Muertos always holds a special place in our hearts. Its name, as evocative as it is mysterious, contrasts with the vibrant explosion of life and color we find when stepping onto its shore. The waters, of an unreal turquoise color, invite us to immerse ourselves in a world of clarity and serenity. It is a place where time seems to stand still, where the horizon merges with the intense blue of the sky and sea, gifting us one of Spain's most impressive postcards.
How to Get to Playa de los Muertos
The access to Playa de los Muertos is part of its legend and, at the same time, the 'toll' we must pay to enjoy its immaculate beauty. It is not an easily accessible beach, and precisely that is what helps keep it so pristine and special. To get there, we must first head to Carboneras, and from there, take the road towards Agua Amarga.
Parking and Walking Route
We will see a signposted turnoff towards the beach, where we will find a designated parking area (paid during the high season, generally from June to September). Once parked, the real adventure begins. The walking path is a trail of approximately 700 meters, with a considerable slope and uneven terrain, composed of loose earth and small stones. It is essential to wear appropriate footwear, preferably sports or trekking shoes, and avoid flip-flops or sandals that do not support the foot well.
We always recommend taking it easy, enjoying the landscape while descending, and, above all, being prepared for the return climb, which is more demanding. For families with young children or people with reduced mobility, this access can be a significant challenge, so we advise against their visit in these cases. Nevertheless, the effort is more than rewarded when contemplating the majesty of the beach from the last stretch of the trail; the view is, simply, spectacular.
The Sand and Water
Playa de los Muertos is not your typical fine, golden sand beach. Its charm lies, to a large extent, in its unique geological composition. When stepping onto its shore, we will encounter a mix of coarse sand and, predominantly, pebbles and sea-polished stones. These pebbles, of different sizes and shades, become a characteristic element that gives it a wild and authentic appearance. Walking barefoot can be a bit uncomfortable at first, but the feeling of the stones underfoot is part of the experience.
But if something captivates us about Playa de los Muertos, it's its waters. They are, simply, astonishing! Of an intense turquoise blue color, so transparent that we can see the seabed with amazing clarity, even at several meters depth. This clarity is due to the absence of strong currents and the composition of the seabed. Diving in here is like swimming in a giant natural pool, with the advantage of being surrounded by a pristine and incomparable landscape. The water temperature is usually very pleasant during the summer months, inviting long swims and exploration of its seabed.
Services and Facilities
Precisely, one of the attractions of Playa de los Muertos is its almost virgin character, which implies a significant limitation in terms of services and facilities. If we are looking for a beach with chiringuitos right on the sand, showers, public toilets, or umbrella and sunbed rentals, this is not the right place. And indeed, the beauty of this beach lies in its natural state, in the absence of development and the hand of man.
The only services we find are:
- Parking: As mentioned, there is a parking lot at the top of the cliff, paid during the high season. It is the only point where we can leave our vehicle.
- Lifeguard Service: During the summer months (normally from July to August), the beach has a lifeguard service, which is an important safety point, given the characteristics of the access and the influx of bathers. It is essential to always heed their instructions.
- Plenty of water and refreshing drinks.
- Food and snacks, as there are no dining options on the beach.
- Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
- A beach umbrella or tent if we need shade, as there is hardly any natural vegetation to provide it.
- A bag to collect all our waste and take it back, thus keeping the beach clean and pristine.
Best Time to Visit
Choosing the best time to visit Playa de los Muertos is key to fully enjoying its charm, avoiding crowds or unfavorable weather conditions. We, from our experience, can say that each season has its particular appeal, but some are more recommendable than others.
Spring and Autumn: The Ideal Choice
For us, the months of spring (April, May, early June) and autumn (September, October) are, without a doubt, the best option. During these times:
- Pleasant Temperatures: The climate in Almería is mild, with ideal temperatures for swimming and enjoying the sun without the stifling heat of
