Introduction
If there is a spot on the Asturian coast that has stolen our hearts with its serene beauty and enveloping atmosphere, that is, without a doubt, Playa de Andrín. Located in the idyllic municipality of Llanes, this cove is a true treasure that invites us to disconnect and immerse ourselves in the purest essence of the Cantabrian Sea. We are faced with one of those beaches of Asturias that, despite its popularity, retains an air of authenticity and a natural charm that makes it unique. From the moment we glimpse its golden sand and crystal-clear waters, we know we have arrived at a special place, a refuge where time seems to stand still.
Playa de Andrín is much more than just a sandy beach; it is a canvas painted by nature, where rugged cliffs blend with the greenery of the vegetation and the deep blue of the sea. Its most distinctive feature, and one that makes it such a photogenic beach, is the majestic Castro islet, which emerges from the water like a silent guardian, adding a dramatic and picturesque touch to the landscape. It is the kind of place that invites contemplation, long walks along the shore, and enjoying the sea breeze while the sun caresses our skin. For us, it is an essential destination for those seeking the perfect combination of natural beauty, tranquility, and the essence of the Asturian coast.
How to Get to Playa de Andrín
Getting to Playa de Andrín is relatively straightforward, although, like many hidden gems of Asturias, it requires a little planning. We always recommend taking the N-634 road or the Cantabrian Motorway (A-8) towards Llanes. Once we reach the vicinity of the council's capital, we must take the exit towards Andrín, which is well signposted.
By Car
The most comfortable access is, without a doubt, by car. From Llanes, the journey is short, just about 10-15 minutes. The local road leading to the beach is narrow in some sections but is in good condition. Upon arrival, we will find a small designated parking area, although in high season it tends to fill up quickly. Our recommendation is to arrive early if you visit the beach in the summer months to secure a spot. If the main parking is full, there are often parking options in the surroundings of the village of Andrín, which involves a small additional walk to the sand.
Public Transport
Public transport to Playa de Andrín is more limited. There are bus lines connecting Llanes with nearby villages, but to get directly to the beach, it is most likely we will need a taxi or to walk from the village of Andrín. We, honestly, believe that the autonomy of a car is the best option for exploring this area and enjoying the freedom to move between the different beaches of Llanes and its surroundings.
The Sand and Water
Playa de Andrín wins us over with its exquisite fine golden sand, a delight for the feet that invites us to take off our shoes and feel every grain beneath them. It is soft sand, perfect for spreading out a towel and enjoying long hours of sun or for the little ones to build their sandcastles without difficulty. The beach's length, about 250 meters, makes it spacious enough not to feel crowded, even on busier days, allowing us to find our own space of tranquility.
The waters of the Cantabrian Sea at Andrín are another of its great attractions. They are usually crystal-clear and of an emerald green hue that contrasts wonderfully with the deep blue of the open sea. Although we are in the north, and the water temperature is cooler than in the Mediterranean, it is surprisingly pleasant for a refreshing dip, especially in the summer months. Furthermore, the beach is sheltered by the cliffs, which often translates into moderate waves, ideal for a calm and safe swim. This characteristic makes it an excellent option for families with young children, who can enjoy the sea without major worries. The combination of soft sand and clean, calm waters is, for us, what defines the experience at this wonderful beach in Llanes.
Services and Facilities
Despite its natural and wild appearance, Playa de Andrín has some essential services that make our stay more comfortable. It is important to remember that many of these services are seasonal, operating mainly during the summer months when visitor numbers are higher.
Among the services we can find, the following stand out:
- Parking: As we already mentioned, there is a parking area near the beach, although with limited spaces. It is a relief to be able to park relatively close to the sand, avoiding long walks with all the beach gear.
- Showers: After a refreshing dip in the Cantabrian Sea, we always appreciate being able to rinse off the salt and sand. Playa de Andrín has showers (generally with cold water) for this purpose, a detail we always value.
- Chiringuitos: In high season, there is usually one or two chiringuitos where we can replenish our energy with a cold drink, an ice cream, or even some simple food. It's perfect for those days when we don't feel like leaving the beach to eat. We always enjoy a cold beer with sea views.
- Lifeguard Service: During the bathing season, the beach has a lifeguard service, which gives us great peace of mind, especially if we are with children. The presence of lifeguards is a key factor for safety on any beach, and at Andrín they care about that. However, it is important to remember that Playa de Andrín does not hold the 'Blue Flag', a distinction that certifies a s
