Introduction

If there is a place on the Asturian coast that has stolen our hearts with its unique beauty and peaceful atmosphere, that is, without a doubt, Playa de Ballota. Located in the privileged municipality of Llanes, this cove is much more than just a sandy beach; it is a natural canvas where the intense green of the meadows blends with the vibrant blue of the Cantabrian Sea and the gold of its sand. We, as lovers of Asturias beaches, always seek those corners that offer us something more, an experience that goes beyond sun and sea, and Ballota fulfills that promise in spades.

Upon arriving at Playa de Ballota, one realizes they have found a little paradise. Its most distinctive feature, the imposing Castro islet, emerges majestically from the waters, creating an unmistakable silhouette that has become the hallmark of this Llanes beach. The feeling of isolation, despite its relative proximity to urban centers, is palpable. Here, time seems to stand still, inviting us to disconnect from the hustle and bustle and immerse ourselves in the serenity that only pristine nature can offer. It is a destination we highly recommend to those seeking an authentic connection with the marine environment and a good dose of tranquility.

How to get to Playa de Ballota

Getting to Playa de Ballota is part of the adventure and charm of this Asturian corner. Although it is not in the center of Llanes, access is relatively simple and well signposted. We always advise planning the route to enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

Access by car

From Llanes, the most common way to get there is by taking the AS-263 road towards Posada de Llanes. After a few kilometers, you will see well-marked turnoffs towards beaches like Toró, Barro, or Ballota itself. You must pay attention to the signs indicating access to the beach. The road will take you through a typically Asturian rural landscape, with green meadows and scattered farmhouses, which in itself is a pleasure for the eyes.

The Parking is one of the points to consider. Playa de Ballota has a parking area, although it is not excessively large and in high season it can fill up quickly. We always recommend arriving early, especially during July and August, if we want to secure a good spot. The parking is usually a designated area in a nearby meadow, a few minutes' walk from the sand. It is a simple parking lot, without major infrastructure, but it serves its purpose.

Access on foot

Once we have left the car, the final access to the sand of Playa de Ballota is via a path or some stairs, depending on the access point. This final stretch, although not excessively complicated, does require a minimum of mobility and is not adapted for people with reduced mobility or baby strollers. But trust us, the small effort is well worth it. The path is surrounded by vegetation, allowing us to anticipate the beauty that awaits us. It is a short walk, just five to ten minutes from the parking lot, that mentally prepares us for the natural spectacle.

Public transport

Public transport to Playa de Ballota is limited. The bus lines operating in the area usually cover the main towns and some of the more urbanized beaches. For Ballota, the most practical would be to take a bus to Llanes and, from there, take a taxi or, if we are adventurous, undertake a longer walk (which we do not recommend with beach gear) or use our own vehicle. We always opt for the car for greater comfort and schedule freedom when visiting this type of more remote beach.

The sand and the water

Playa de Ballota seduces us, first of all, with the quality of its sand and the transparency of its waters. It is one of those Asturias beaches that invites you to take off your shoes and feel the earth under your feet.

The sand

The sand of Ballota is fine and of an intense golden color, very characteristic of the eastern Asturian coast. It is soft to the touch, perfect for walking barefoot, for children to play building sandcastles, or simply for reclining and enjoying the sun. We greatly appreciate the cleanliness of the sand, a reflection of the care and respect for the natural environment promoted on these coasts. Unlike other beaches with pebbles or rocks, softness predominates here, making it very comfortable for long beach days. At the ends of the cove, it is true that we will find some rock formations and small stones, but the center of the beach is an extensive blanket of fine sand.

The water

The waters of the Cantabrian Sea at Playa de Ballota are of astonishing clarity. They usually have tones ranging from emerald green to turquoise blue, especially on sunny days. We, who have visited many Llanes beaches, are always surprised by the transparency that allows us to see the seabed in many areas. This, combined with the quality of the sand, makes it an ideal place for swimming.

The water temperature is typical of the Cantabrian Sea: cool, invigorating, but perfectly suitable for swimming during the summer months. We, who are not the bravest with the cold, quickly get used to it and enjoy every dip. The waves are usually moderate, although as on the entire Cantabrian coast, they can vary depending on weather conditions. Generally, the beach is quite sheltered thanks to the cliffs that flank it, which helps mitigate strong waves, making swimming safer and more pleasant, especially for those not accustomed to big waves.
