How to Get to Playa de Fabal

Getting to Playa de Fabal is, in itself, part of the adventure and charm that surrounds it. Located in the municipality of Navia, in western Asturias, this hidden gem requires a small effort to be reached, which helps maintain its semi-virgin character and keeps it safe from large crowds. We always recommend planning the route in advance, as access is not as direct as to other more urbanized beaches.

Access by Car

If we're coming from the A-8 highway, the most convenient exit will be Navia. Once in the town of Navia, we must head west on the local road that runs along the coast. There are signs, albeit discreet, towards the Fabal area or its surroundings. The car is, without a doubt, the best option to get near the beach, as public transport does not reach this remote point directly.

Parking

Near the start of the trail that descends to the beach, there is usually a small parking area to leave the vehicle. It's an unpaved, dirt parking lot, and its capacity is limited, especially in the summer months. Therefore, if we plan to visit Playa de Fabal during the high season, we advise arriving early to secure a spot. From this point, the adventure on foot begins.

The Footpath

Once the car is parked, a trail of a few hundred meters awaits us, descending to the sand. It's a well-marked path, but with some slope and uneven sections, so we recommend wearing comfortable and appropriate footwear, avoiding flip-flops or unstable sandals. For us, this walk is a preparation for the beauty that awaits us, a prelude to the tranquility we'll find upon arrival. The descent is relatively short, but the return can be a bit more demanding due to the climb. However, the effort is well worth it, as the reward is one of the most captivating beaches of Asturias.

The Sand and the Water

When we first set foot on Playa de Fabal, the first thing that captivates us is the quality of its sand. Here, we find fine sand, of a golden tone that shines under the Asturian sun, inviting us to take off our shoes and feel its softness between our toes. It's clean sand, free of large rocks or pebbles in the main bathing area, making it a very pleasant place to walk barefoot or simply lay out a towel and enjoy the sun. The beach's length, about 350 meters, offers enough space so that, even on busier days, we can find our own corner of tranquility.

The Waters of the Cantabrian Sea

The waters that bathe Playa de Fabal are a spectacle in themselves. Of an intense greenish-blue color, they are known for their crystal-clear transparency, allowing us to easily see the seabed on the calmest days. As is usual in the Cantabrian Sea, the water temperature is cool, especially outside the summer months, but this doesn't detract one bit from its appeal. On the contrary, for us, a dip in these invigorating waters is the best way to refresh and feel the energy of the ocean.

Rock Formations

Although the predominant type of soil in the bathing area is sand, the ends of the beach are flanked by interesting rock formations and small crags. These rocks not only add an aesthetic element to the landscape, making Fabal an exceptionally photogenic beach, but they also create small natural pools and shaded areas that are perfect for exploration. We love spending time investigating the pools that form at low tide, discovering the small marine life that inhabits them. It's a detail that adds to the experience of a wild and authentic beach, where every corner has something to offer.

One of the characteristics that define Playa de Fabal and that, for us, is part of its intrinsic charm, is the limited availability of services and facilities. Unlike other more urbanized beaches of Asturias, Fabal maintains its virgin and natural essence, which implies less infrastructure. This is precisely what makes it an ideal destination for those seeking to disconnect and enjoy nature in its purest state.

Basic Services

The most relevant service we will find near Playa de Fabal is, as already mentioned, the unpaved parking located at the top of the cliff, near the start of the access trail. It's a crucial point for those arriving by private vehicle.
