From the moment we set foot on Playa de Merón, we knew we had found a special corner on the wonderful Asturian coast. Located in the municipality of Villaviciosa, this beach is a gem that combines the tranquility of a natural environment with the comfort of excellent services. Its fine, golden sand, bathed by the clean waters of the Cantabrian Sea, invites us to completely disconnect and enjoy the essence of summer.

For us, Playa de Merón is not just a destination; it's an experience. It's the place where children build sandcastles with overflowing imagination, where couples stroll at sunset, and where nature lovers find their space. It's one of those beaches of Asturias that stays etched in your memory, an authentic refuge that allows us to escape the hustle and bustle and reconnect with the calm of the sea. Its relaxed atmosphere and scenic beauty make it a perfect choice for any type of traveler, but especially for those seeking a quiet and family-friendly plan.

How to Get to Playa de Merón

Getting to Playa de Merón is relatively straightforward, which makes it even more attractive. It is located in the council of Villaviciosa, and the most comfortable way to access it is by car.

Access by Car

From the A-8 motorway (Autovía del Cantábrico), we take the exit towards Villaviciosa. Once in the municipality, we follow the signs towards the coast, specifically towards the Argüero area or the beach itself. The local road that takes us to the beach is picturesque and well signposted.

Parking

The beach has parking areas that, although they can fill up quickly during the high season, usually have sufficient capacity. It is advisable to arrive early during the months of July and August to secure a good spot. Some parking areas are free, while others may be paid, especially those closest to the sand.

Public Transport

Although less frequent, there are some bus lines that connect Villaviciosa with nearby coastal towns, but the service is not as direct to the beach as to consider leaving the car at home if we are not staying very close by.

The Sand and Water

The first thing that captivates us about Playa de Merón is its sand. It is fine and of a beautiful golden color that shines under the Asturian sun. It's perfect for walking barefoot, for the little ones to play without worries, and for spreading out our towel and enjoying a good book. We won't find rocks or pebbles to bother us, just a natural carpet of soft sand that stretches for its approximately 550 meters.

As for the water, the waters of Playa de Merón are generally calm, especially compared to other more exposed beaches of the Cantabrian Sea. This makes it an excellent place for swimming, especially for families with children. The water quality is excellent, as reflected in its Blue Flag distinction, a seal of guarantee that gives us total confidence. Although the Atlantic always has its touch of freshness, on summer days the temperatures are very pleasant for a dip. The seabed is sandy, which makes entering and exiting the water easy without unpleasant surprises.

Playa de Merón is very well equipped, which contributes to making our beach day as comfortable as possible.

Among the services we can find, the following stand out:

• Showers: Essential for washing off the salt and sand before heading home.
• Bathrooms/WC: Clean and accessible facilities for all visitors.
• Lifeguard Service: During the high season, the beach has a lifeguard service that watches over our safety, which gives us great peace of mind, especially if we are with children.
• Chiringuitos: Several establishments right on the beach or very close by allow us to enjoy a refreshment, an ice cream, or even a light meal without having to go too far from the sand.
• Parking: As we already mentioned, there are parking areas to facilitate access.

Best Time to Visit

Playa de Merón is beautiful at any time of the year, but the 'best' time will depend on what we are looking for.

• Summer (June to September): Without a doubt, it's the ideal time for swimming and enjoying all the services. The temperatures are warmer, the days are longer, and the atmosphere is vibrant and family-friendly. However, it's also when we'll find the most people.
• Spring (April and May) and Autumn (October and November): For us, these seasons are perfect if we're looking for tranquility. The days are usually sunny and pleasant, ideal for long walks along the shore, surfing, or simply relaxing listening to the waves. The beach is less crowded and the landscape is painted with spectacular colors.
• Winter (December to March): For the bravest or for those who enjoy the wild beauty of the Cantabrian Sea, winter offers impressive landscapes. It's ideal for photography or for completely disconnecting from the world, although not for swimming, except for the most experienced surfers.
