Introduction
Today we delve into one of those breathtaking corners, a true hidden treasure in western Asturias: Playa de Porcía. Located in the charming municipality of El Franco, this beach is not just another stretch of sand on the vast and beautiful coast of Asturias, but a place with a very particular charm that invites us to disconnect and immerse ourselves in natural beauty. Its most iconic feature, without a doubt, is that small rocky island, known as 'El Castelo', which rises majestically off the shore and which we can access on foot thanks to a picturesque bridge. This particularity makes it an almost storybook setting, different from many other beaches we have had the pleasure of visiting.
When we think of an escape that combines tranquility, scenic beauty, and comfort for all family members, Playa de Porcía always comes to mind as one of the first options. Its waters are usually calm, its sand fine and golden, and the natural surroundings, with green cliffs and lush vegetation, make it a perfect canvas for relaxation and contemplation. It is one of those beaches in Asturias that, once you know it, you know you'll want to return to again and again. We love how this place has managed to maintain its natural essence while offering essential services to make our visit as pleasant as possible.
How to Get to Playa de Porcía
Getting to Playa de Porcía is relatively easy, which adds another point to its appeal, especially for those traveling with children or seeking extra comfort on their journey. If we are coming from the center of Asturias or from Galicia, the main access route is the Autovía del Cantábrico (A-8). We must take exit 477, which directs us towards La Caridad/El Franco/Boal. Once we have left the highway, we will follow the signs to Porcía or to the beach, via local roads that wind through green landscapes. The journey from the highway exit is short and well signposted, which makes arrival easy even for first-time visitors.
Once in the vicinity of the beach, we will find a designated parking area, which is a great advantage, especially during the summer months when visitor numbers are higher. This parking lot is usually spacious and allows us to leave the car at a comfortable distance to access the sand. From the parking lot, a well-maintained path, although with some slope, leads directly to the beach. It is not a complicated access, but we should consider that it is not completely flat, so people with very limited mobility might find some difficulty, although the walk is short and very pleasant, offering us the first glimpses of the spectacular landscape that awaits us. We always recommend arriving early in the high season to secure a good spot in the parking lot and enjoy the beach more peacefully before it gets crowded.
The Sand and the Water
Playa de Porcía welcomes us with fine sand of a golden hue that invites us to take off our shoes and feel it under our feet. It is the perfect type of sand for building castles, strolling quietly along the shore, or simply lying down to enjoy the sun. The texture is very pleasant, without large rocks or pebbles in the main bathing area, making it very comfortable for all ages. However, at the ends of the beach and around the island, we do find rock formations that, in addition to adding a touch of wild beauty to the landscape, are ideal for exploring, looking for small sea creatures, or simply admiring the force of nature that has shaped them.
The waters of Playa de Porcía are, in general, calm and crystal clear, especially on calm days. Being in a protected cove, the waves are usually not very strong, making it a safe and very pleasant place for swimming, especially for the little ones. The water temperature, as is usual on the beaches of Asturias, is cool but very refreshing on hot summer days. We love diving into its transparent waters and watching how the sunlight filters through them. The cleanliness of its waters is another strong point of this beach, an aspect we greatly value and which, in fact, is recognized with the presence of the Blue Flag, a distinction of environmental quality and services that gives us an extra guarantee that we are in an exceptional place.
Services and Facilities
One of the aspects we value most about Playa de Porcía is the balance it has achieved between maintaining its natural beauty and offering a series of essential services that make our stay much more comfortable and safer. We know that for many, and for ourselves, the availability of certain facilities is key when choosing a beach, and Porcía excels in this regard. During the bathing season, which usually covers the summer months, the beach has lifeguard services, which gives us great peace of mind, especially when we go with children. The presence of well-equipped and prepared lifeguards is essential to ensure the safety of all bathers, and at Porcía, we can relax knowing we are protected.
In addition to the security service, the beach has showers so we can rinse off the sand and salt after a refreshing swim, and public bathrooms/WCs, an indispensable service we often miss at other wilder beaches. These details make a big difference in the comfort of our visit. For those days when the sun is strong or we simply feel like having a drink, Playa de Porcía usually has chiringuitos
