Introduction
From the moment we set foot on Cala Blava, we knew we had found a little treasure on the coast of Llucmajor, on the beautiful island of Mallorca. This cove, often overshadowed by the island's larger and busier beaches, captivated us with its intimate atmosphere and hypnotic blue waters. It's one of those corners we like to keep close to our hearts, but also feel compelled to share with those seeking the true essence of the Mediterranean: tranquility, natural beauty, and the promise of total disconnection.
Cala Blava is not an extensive beach, nor does it have massive tourist infrastructure. And that is precisely where much of its charm lies. It is a sheltered cove, nestled in a residential area, which gives it a feeling of a 'local beach' where life moves at a leisurely pace. Its waters, of astonishing clarity, invite you to dive in and forget the world, while the soft sand caresses your feet. For us, it is the perfect place to recharge and enjoy the simplicity of an authentic beach day.
In this article, we will guide you through everything Cala Blava and its surroundings have to offer. From how to get to this paradise corner to the activities you can enjoy, along with practical tips and recommendations to make your visit unforgettable. Get your towels and sunglasses ready, because we are diving into one of the best-kept secrets of the Balearic beaches.
How to get to Cala Blava
Getting to Cala Blava is relatively easy, although its location in a residential area can make the entrance less obvious than other, better-signposted beaches. If you are coming from Palma, the drive takes about 15-20 minutes, taking the Ma-19 towards Llucmajor/Santanyí and turning off towards the Cala Blava area.
From the town of Llucmajor itself, the journey is even shorter, just 10-15 minutes. We recommend using GPS so you don't get lost on the streets of the residential area. Once there, you will find parking on the streets surrounding the cove. It is important to consider that, being a residential area, parking can be limited during the high season months, so we advise arriving early to secure a good spot.
For those who prefer public transport, there are bus lines connecting Palma with the Cala Blava area, although frequencies may be lower and the stop may not be right at the entrance to the cove, requiring a short walk. However, for us, the convenience of arriving by car and having the freedom to explore the surroundings is unbeatable.
The sand and the water
The first thing that surprises us upon arriving at Cala Blava is the quality of its fine, golden sand. It is a delight to walk barefoot on it, to feel it slip between your toes. Although it is not a very wide beach, it offers enough space to lay out a towel and enjoy the sun without feeling crowded. The predominant ground type is sand, which makes it very comfortable for swimming and for children.
But if there is one thing that truly makes us fall in love with this cove, it's its waters. They are simply spectacular! The sea here is an intense turquoise blue, incredibly clear and, most importantly, very calm. The cove is well protected from waves, making it a perfect natural swimming pool for bathing, even for less experienced swimmers. The underwater visibility is fantastic, inviting snorkeling to discover the marine life hiding among the rocks and seagrass.
The entry into the water is gentle and gradual, without sudden drops, making it ideal for families. We have spent hours floating in its waters, watching the small fish and enjoying the peace that permeates this environment. It is, without a doubt, the main attraction of Cala Blava and what makes us return again and again.
Services and facilities
As we have already mentioned, Cala Blava is characterized by its more natural and less crowded atmosphere, which translates into more basic but sufficient services for enjoying a beach day. Do not expect large leisure complexes or an extensive offer of sunbed and umbrella rentals, as the philosophy here is different.
Among the services you will find, and which we consider essential, we highlight:
- Showers: It has showers to rinse off the salt and sand before heading home, a detail we always appreciate.
- Parking: As already indicated, there are parking areas on the streets of the adjacent residential area. It is free, but in high season you may need to search a bit.
- Chiringuitos: Although there is no chiringuito on the sand itself, you will find some small bar or kiosk in the immediate vicinity or a short distance away, where you can refresh yourself with a drink, an ice cream, or even have a light snack. For a more formal meal, you will have to go a bit further.
- Trash bins: It is essential to keep the cove clean, and there are bins available to dispose of waste. We always carry an extra bag for our own trash and for any litter left by others.
Best time to visit
For us, choosing the best time to visit Cala Blava depends a lot on what you are looking for. If your goal is to enjoy the cove with maximum tranquility, avoiding crowds and benefiting
