How to Get to Cala Cavalleria

Getting to Cala Cavalleria is part of the adventure and prepares us for the disconnection that awaits. From Es Mercadal, the route is relatively simple, although it requires a private vehicle, as public transport does not reach the cove itself. We take the road towards Fornells and, before arriving, find a clearly signposted turnoff towards the beach and the Cavalleria Lighthouse. It's important to pay attention to the signs, as the last stretch is along a rural track that, although mostly paved, can be narrow in some spots.

Once we reach the vicinity of the beach, we find a designated parking area. During the summer months, especially in July and August, this parking is usually paid and fills up easily, so we recommend arriving early if we want to secure a good spot and avoid crowds. From the parking lot, a ten to fifteen-minute walk awaits us along a well-marked path of dirt and some stones. This short walk, although comfortable, advises us to wear suitable footwear, no thin flip-flops, to enjoy it without problems. The journey already gifts us with spectacular views of the coast and hints at the beauty awaiting us at the end of the path.

The Sand and the Water

The sand of Cala Cavalleria is, without a doubt, its most distinctive feature and what makes it a truly unique beach. Its intense reddish color, a result of the clay and minerals in the surrounding cliffs, envelops us in an almost Martian atmosphere, different from any other beach we have visited on the island. It is a 'fine' type sand, very pleasant to the touch, that slips through our fingers and invites us to lie on it to enjoy the Mediterranean sun. We always recommend bringing a dark-colored towel or one we don't mind getting slightly stained, as the reddish pigment can adhere a bit to fabrics, although it comes out easily with a good wash.

But if the sand is impressive, the water of Cala Cavalleria is not far behind. Its shades range from a light turquoise at the shore to a deep blue beyond the bathing area, with a transparency that allows us to see the seabed with total clarity. The waters are usually calm and shallow in the first few meters, making it ideal for a relaxing dip. The absence of strong currents and the natural protection of the bay contribute to creating a safe and peaceful environment for swimming. We love diving in and discovering the marine life hidden beneath its waters, a spectacle of small fish and rock formations that invite snorkeling.

The only 'service' we can consider is the parking area we have already mentioned. Even this parking, in high season, may have a cost and does not offer many more comforts than space to leave the car. Therefore, we always advise those visiting Cala Cavalleria to come prepared: it is essential to bring everything we might need for our beach day. This includes plenty of water, refreshing drinks, some food or snacks, high-factor sunscreen, a cap or hat, and an umbrella if we don't want to expose ourselves too much to the sun. The lack of services forces us to be foresighted, but in return, it gifts us an incomparable beach experience, where the only company is the sea breeze and the sound of the waves.

During the peak of summer, the influx of visitors is considerable, the parking fills up quickly, and the walk under the sun can be more demanding.
