Introduction
Welcome to Playa de Es Cavallet, a true icon of the island of Ibiza and, without a doubt, one of the most unique beaches in the Balearic Islands. For us, Es Cavallet is not simply a place to sunbathe; it's an experience, a state of mind. Located within the Ses Salines Natural Park, this beach offers us a landscape of protected dunes, fine white sand stretching for over a kilometre, and turquoise waters that invite swimming and contemplation.
What makes Playa de Es Cavallet truly special is its duality. On one hand, it's a paradise for naturism, being one of the first beaches in Spain where nudism was openly practised and tolerated. Furthermore, it's a meeting point for the LGBTQ+ community and for all those seeking a sophisticated and cosmopolitan atmosphere in its famous beach bars. Here, wild nature merges with a touch of Ibizan glamour, creating an atmosphere that is both relaxed and vibrant. We love how every corner of this beach has its own personality, from the most tranquil and secluded areas to the most lively spots with music and cocktails.
How to Get to Playa de Es Cavallet
Getting to Playa de Es Cavallet is relatively straightforward, although it requires a small journey into the Ses Salines Natural Park, which already hints at the natural beauty awaiting us. From Ibiza town, the drive takes about 15-20 minutes. We always recommend renting a car on the island for total freedom of movement, and this is one of those destinations where it's essential.
As we enter the park, we'll follow the signs to the beach. We'll see the salt pans on both sides of the road, a stunning landscape that changes colour depending on the time of year. At the end of the road, we'll find a paid parking area, which is usually quite busy, especially in high season. It's advisable to arrive early if we want to secure a good spot. Once parked, a short walk through the dunes, which are protected and must be respected, will take us directly to the shore. There are also taxi or private transport options, but the public bus does not go directly to the beach, leaving us at a considerable distance that would involve a long walk.
The Sand and the Water
If there's something that captivates us about Playa de Es Cavallet, it's its fine sand and its water. The sand is an almost pristine white, soft under our feet, making it perfect for walking barefoot or simply lying down to enjoy the sun. It stretches for over a kilometre, offering us plenty of space to find our ideal spot, even on the busiest days.
The waters, on the other hand, are of astonishing clarity and display that range of blues and turquoises so characteristic of Balearic beaches. They are generally calm, although on days with a southerly wind, small waves may appear, adding a touch of freshness. The clarity of the water is largely due to the presence of Posidonia Oceanica, a seagrass that is fundamental to the Mediterranean ecosystem and acts as a natural filter. Although we may sometimes see Posidonia remains on the shore, it's a sign of the sea's health and a reminder that we are in a protected natural environment. We love diving into these waters, feeling the caress of the sun and the freshness of the Mediterranean.
Services and Facilities
Despite its natural and protected character, Playa de Es Cavallet boasts an excellent range of services and facilities that make our visit even more comfortable and pleasant. We are pleasantly surprised to find a balance between environmental conservation and visitor care.
First of all, the beach bars (chiringuitos) are an essential part of the Es Cavallet experience. Some of them, like 'El Chiringuito' or 'La Escollera', are world-famous for their chic atmosphere, exquisite gastronomy, and spectacular views. Here we can enjoy a refreshing cocktail, a gourmet lunch, or a romantic dinner at sunset. These establishments usually also offer sun loungers and umbrellas for rent, perfect for those seeking extra comfort.
Furthermore, the beach has basic services like showers to rinse off the salt and sand, and clean, well-maintained toilets/WCs, generally associated with the beach bars. Safety is also covered, as we have lifeguards during the high season, giving us peace of mind when enjoying a swim. As mentioned, there is a fairly large paid parking area, although we always recommend arriving with time to spare. In summary, Es Cavallet offers us the perfect combination of pristine nature and modern comforts.
Best Time to Visit
For us, choosing the best time to visit Playa de Es Cavallet depends a lot on what we're looking for in our experience. Ibiza, in general, has a Mediterranean climate that allows us to enjoy its beaches for much of the year, but Es Cavallet has its particularities.
If our goal is to enjoy the sun and sea with maximum liveliness and all services available, the months of June and September are ideal. The weather is warm and sunny, the water is at a perfect temperature for swimming, and the beach bars are in full swing. Furthermore, the crowds are considerable, but not as overwhelming as in the peak of August.
July and August are the quintessential high season months. The beach is vibrant, with a festive and cosmopolitan atmosphere. However, this is also when the beach is most crowded and service prices can be higher. If we don't mind the crowds and are looking for the most animated atmosphere, these months are perfect.
