Introduction

From our perspective as experts on the Balearic beaches, Playa de Sant Elm is certainly one of those hidden gems that Mallorca holds and deserves to be discovered at a leisurely pace. Located in the picturesque municipality of Andratx, this cove offers us a perfect combination of natural beauty, tranquility, and services, making it an idyllic destination both for those seeking a romantic getaway and for families with young children.

Upon arriving in Sant Elm, the first thing that captivates us is its impressive views. In front of us, majestic, rises the silhouette of the island of Sa Dragonera, a protected Natural Park that seems to watch over the bay, adding a touch of mystery and grandeur to the landscape. The fine, golden sand, together with the crystal-clear waters in turquoise hues, immediately invite us to dive in and forget the hustle and bustle. We love how this corner manages to preserve its essence as a fishing village, despite having quality tourist infrastructure. It is not a crowded beach like other areas of the island, which gives it a much more relaxed and authentic atmosphere, ideal for disconnecting and recharging your energy.

How to Get to Playa de Sant Elm

Getting to Playa de Sant Elm is relatively straightforward, although we must consider that its location at the southwestern tip of Mallorca implies a short journey from Palma. We always recommend the route by car, as it offers the most flexibility and allows us to enjoy the scenery at our own pace. From Palma, the trip takes approximately 35-45 minutes, taking the Ma-1 towards Andratx and then turning off towards Sant Elm. The road is well signposted and in good condition, although the last few kilometers have gentle curves, typical of the island's coastal areas.

By Car

Access by car is, without a doubt, the most comfortable option. Once we approach the village of Sant Elm, we will find several parking areas, both paid and some free options a little further from the center. During the high season, especially in July and August, parking can be a challenge, so we advise arriving early to secure a good spot. There are well-located public car parks that, although paid, give us direct access to the beach and the village services.

Public Transport

For those who prefer not to drive, there is the option of arriving by bus. The TIB line (Transport de les Illes Balears) connects Palma with Andratx and then with Sant Elm. It is an economical and ecological alternative, although the travel time is longer and the schedules can be more limited, especially outside the high season. We think it's a good option if we are staying in Palma and want to take a day trip without worrying about the car.

The Sand and Water

One of the main attractions of Playa de Sant Elm is, without a doubt, the quality of its sand and the purity of its waters. We describe it as a beach with fine sand of a pale golden hue, very pleasant to the touch and perfect for laying out a towel and relaxing in the sun. We won't find pebbles or annoying rocks in most of the bathing area, which makes it very comfortable for walking barefoot and for children to play freely.

The waters are simply spectacular. Of a crystal-clear turquoise color, they invite us to dive in from the first moment. The transparency is such that we can easily see the seabed, making it an ideal place to practice snorkeling. Sant Elm bay is protected, which means the waters are usually very calm, with little or no current, which is a big plus for families and for those who don't feel very confident in the sea. The entrance to the water is gentle and gradual, making bathing easy for people of all ages.

Around the main beach, there are small rocky coves where nature is shown in its purest state. Here, the contrast between the rock and the intense blue of the sea creates truly photogenic landscapes. Although the main beach is sandy, the presence of some rocky areas on the sides adds diversity to the environment and opportunities to explore a little beyond the towel.

Playa de Sant Elm stands out for offering an excellent range of services that contribute to a comfortable and safe beach experience. As beach tourism experts, we always value the presence of infrastructure that facilitates visitors' enjoyment, and Sant Elm more than meets this aspect.

• Lifeguard Service: During the bathing season, the beach has a team of lifeguards who watch over the safety of bathers, which gives us great peace of mind, especially if we go with children.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: Essential for freshening up after a swim in the sea or for changing. They are well-maintained and easily accessible.
• Sunbed and Umbrella Rental: For those who don't want to carry their own equipment, there is the possibility of renting umbrellas and sunbeds, allowing us to relax comfortably in the sun.
• Beach Bars and Restaurants: At the foot of the beach and in its surroundings, we find several chiringuitos and restaurants where we can enjoy a refreshing drink, an ice cream, or a delicious meal with sea views. The gastronomic offer is varied, from more informal options to restaurants with more elaborate dishes.
• Equipment Rental: For the more active, there are rental points for water sports equipment like paddle surfing, kayaking, or snorkeling. It's an excellent way to explore the coast from another perspective.
