Forget the hustle and bustle of the more central beaches; here you'll find a more relaxed atmosphere, perfect for unwinding and enjoying the Mediterranean at its best.
This semi-urban gem offers us an ideal combination of comfort and tranquility. With its crystal-clear waters and golden sand, it's the perfect setting for those summer days we long for. If you're looking for a place where the sea breeze caresses you while children play safely by the shore, you've come to the right place. Allow us to guide you through everything that makes Playa de la Riera Xica special.
How to Get to Playa de la Riera Xica
Getting to Playa de la Riera Xica is relatively straightforward, though it requires a short walk that, honestly, is worth it. Sitges is very well connected, making access easy for everyone.
By Train
The most comfortable and eco-friendly option for many is the train. From Barcelona, you can take a commuter train (R2 Sud line) heading to Vilanova i la Geltrú or Sant Vicenç de Calders, and get off at Sitges station. The journey takes about 35-45 minutes and offers spectacular coastal views. Once at Sitges station, the beach is about a 15-20 minute walk away, following the promenade south towards Terramar. It's a pleasant and easy walk.
By Car
If you prefer the comfort of a car, you can reach Sitges via the C-32 highway. However, finding parking near the beach, especially during the summer months, can be a challenge. There are regulated parking zones (blue zone) and some private car parks in central Sitges, from where you can walk to the beach. Our recommendation is to arrive early if traveling by car to secure a good spot.
By Bus
There are also bus lines connecting Sitges with nearby towns and Barcelona. Once in Sitges, the bus stops are usually in the center, which means a similar walk from the train station to the beach.
The Sand and Water
What captivates us most about Playa de la Riera Xica is, without a doubt, the quality of its sand and the clarity of its waters. Here you'll find fine, golden sand, incredibly pleasant to the touch, perfect for laying out a towel and enjoying a good book or simply for children to build sandcastles with ease.
The waters, of an inviting turquoise blue, are generally calm and shallow near the shore, making them a safe place for families with children. The water cleanliness is notable, allowing excellent visibility for those who enjoy snorkeling near the rocks. The seabed is predominantly sandy, with some rocky areas that add interest and biodiversity. The water temperature, especially in summer, is very pleasant, ideal for cooling off from the Mediterranean heat.
Services and Facilities
Despite being a quieter and less crowded beach than those in central Sitges, Playa de la Riera Xica does not lack the essential services that guarantee a comfortable and pleasant stay. We highly value finding these amenities in a more natural setting.
Among the available services, we highlight:- Showers: Essential for washing off salt and sand before heading home.
- Chiringuitos: You can find one or two chiringuitos where you can refresh yourself with a cold drink, enjoy a snack, or even have a light meal with sea views. They are perfect for those moments when we don't want to stray too far from the shore.
- Lifeguard Service: During the high season, the beach has a lifeguard service, which gives us additional peace of mind, especially if we're with children.
- Sunbed and Umbrella Rental: For those who prefer to travel light, there are stands where you can rent umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds, ensuring a day of sun and relaxation without worries.
- Restrooms/WC: Fundamental for the comfort of all visitors.
Best Time to Visit
Playa de la Riera Xica is a wonderful destination for much of the year, but there are times that, in our opinion, are especially recommended for visiting and enjoying it to the fullest.
Spring (April-May)
We love spring for visiting this beach. The temperatures are mild, the sun is already warm but not overwhelming, and the number of people is considerably lower than in summer. It's the ideal time for a leisurely stroll along the shore, enjoying the calm, and perhaps even daring to take the first swim of the season if you're brave.
Early Summer (June)
June is, for us, the perfect month. The weather is warm and sunny, the sea water is already at a delightful temperature for swimming, and although there are more people, it doesn't yet feel as crowded as in July and August. The days are long, allowing you to enjoy the beach until sunset.
Late Summer and Early Autumn (September-early October)
September and early October give us an extension of summer. The intense heat has subsided, but the sea retains an ideal temperature. Furthermore, most of the August tourists have already left, leaving the beach with a more serene and authentic atmosphere. It's a wonderful time for those seeking tranquility and still want to enjoy a good swim.
