How to Get to Playa de Arrigunaga

Getting to Playa de Arrigunaga is surprisingly easy, which contributes to its popularity. We always prefer comfort and sustainability, so public transport is an excellent option. If we're coming from Bilbao or any point on the Margen Derecha, the Bilbao Metro is our best ally. The Algorta station, about a 15-20 minute walk from the beach, leaves us at a very reasonable distance for a pleasant stroll. Furthermore, various Bizkaibus bus lines have nearby stops, making access even easier.

If we choose to drive, Arrigunaga has several parking areas, both free and paid, especially near the promenade and Puerto Viejo. It's important to consider that during the summer months and on weekends, the influx of visitors is considerable, so arriving early is key to securing a good spot. It's also possible to access by bicycle, as the area is very well connected by bike lanes that are part of Getxo's cycling network, offering a scenic and healthy route.

When we talk about Playa de Arrigunaga, one of the first details that comes to mind is its exquisite fine, golden sand. It's the kind of sand that invites you to take off your shoes and feel it between your toes, perfect for building sandcastles, spreading out a towel, or simply strolling without rush. Its size means that, even on the busiest days, we can always find a little space for ourselves to enjoy the tranquility and sun. The cleanliness of the sand is constant, a reflection of the care dedicated to this beach.

The waters of Arrigunaga are, in general, calm and shallow near the shore, characteristics that make it exceptionally safe for the little ones. The water quality is excellent, a fact certified year after year with the awarding of the Blue Flag, a distinction that gives us confidence that we are in a well-maintained and environmentally respectful setting. Although it's not a beach famous for big waves, on days with a groundswell, beginners in surfing or paddle surfing can find ideal conditions to practice, adding a touch of adventure to our visit.

We always value good infrastructure, and here it doesn't disappoint. To start, we have showers and foot-washing stations to rinse off the sand before heading home, as well as clean and well-maintained bathrooms/WCs, an essential detail for a worry-free beach day.

One of Arrigunaga's strong points is its full accessibility. It has walkways that facilitate access to the shoreline, adapted ramps, and assisted bathing services for people with reduced mobility, demonstrating a real commitment to inclusion. Furthermore, during the high season, the lifeguard service is always present, with qualified personnel watching over our safety. For the little ones, a children's play area is the perfect complement for them to enjoy to the fullest. And, of course, we can't forget the chiringuitos and cafeterias along the promenade, where we can refresh ourselves with a cold drink or enjoy a delicious pintxo with sea views. For those who wish to try some water sports, there are equipment rental points for items like paddle surf boards or kayaks.

Best Time to Visit

Determining the best time to visit Playa de Arrigunaga depends a lot on what we're looking for in our experience. If our main goal is to enjoy the sun and swimming at their peak, the summer months, from June to September, are undoubtedly the most suitable. During this period, temperatures are warmer, the lifeguard service is active, and all the chiringuitos and services are operating at full capacity. However, it's also the time of greatest influx, so the beach can be quite crowded, especially on weekends and holidays.

If we prefer a more tranquil experience, with fewer people but still with good weather, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are excellent alternatives. The climate remains pleasant for walking along the shore or the promenade, and the sunsets take on a special beauty. For photography lovers or those seeking the solitude of the Cantabrian Sea, winter also has its charm, offering dramatic landscapes and the opportunity to feel the power of the sea in a peaceful atmosphere. We, personally, very much enjoy Arrigunaga in any season.
