How to Get to Playa de Barrika

Getting to Playa de Barrika is relatively straightforward, although it requires a short walk that's already part of the experience. If coming from Bilbao, the most common route is to take the BI-634 road towards Mungia and then turn off towards Barrika. The drive usually takes about 25-30 minutes, depending on traffic. Once in the municipality of Barrika, you'll see signs for the beach.

Parking

There are usually free parking areas near the beach, although during high season or on sunny weekends they can fill up quickly. We recommend arriving early to secure a good spot. From the parking area, access to the beach is via a path or stairs descending down the cliff, which contributes to its wilder, less crowded character. It's not suitable for people with reduced mobility or baby strollers, reinforcing its profile as a more natural and adventurous beach.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Barrika is characterized by having mixed sand, with areas of golden sand intermingled with small stones and, above all, impressive rock formations that emerge both on the shore and in the water, especially during low tide. Its accessibility is not total, due to the slope and stairs to reach the sand, and dogs are not allowed during high season.

• Summer (June to September): This is the most popular time for swimming and general beach enjoyment. Temperatures are milder, days are longer, and the lifeguard service is active. • Spring and Autumn (April-May and October-November): For us, these are the golden seasons for more experienced surfers. The waves are usually more consistent and powerful, and the number of visitors is lower.
