Introduction
Welcome to a corner of the Biscayan coast that has stolen our hearts: Playa de Ea. Nestled in the picturesque and unique fishing village that gives it its name, this small cove is not just any beach. It is the soul of Ea, a space where time seems to stand still, and the sound of the waves mixes with the murmur of a village with ancient charm and a history rich in maritime traditions. For us, visiting Playa de Ea is to immerse ourselves in a living postcard, a place where Basque tradition blends perfectly with the natural beauty of the Cantabrian Sea, offering an authentic and deeply enriching experience.
Playa de Ea is, in essence, an extension of the village itself. Its location, between two bridges that cross the river that flows directly into it, gives it a unique and unmistakable personality. Don't expect an extensive beach with vast, endless sands; this is an intimate, family-friendly, and secluded cove that magically transforms with the ebb and flow of the tides, offering a constant and ever-changing natural spectacle. Its atmosphere is predominantly tranquil and authentic, far from the hustle and bustle and overcrowding we often find in other more popular coastal destinations, making it the ideal place for those of us seeking to disconnect, find calm, and enjoy the purest essence of the Basque coast. We love its secluded character, its serene atmosphere, and the comforting feeling of being in a truly special, almost secret place, which only true lovers of peace and natural beauty can appreciate in all its magnitude. It is a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered.
How to Get to Playa de Ea
Getting to Playa de Ea is part of the adventure and intrinsic charm of this very particular destination. Ea is a village of narrow and steep streets, which gives it a very particular and traditional air, but also implies certain logistical considerations when planning our access. We always recommend tackling the journey with patience and a willingness to fully enjoy the road, as the rural and coastal landscapes of Bizkaia that accompany us are a true wonder worth contemplating.
By Car
For most visitors, the car is the most comfortable and flexible option to get to Ea. If we start from Bilbao, we will take the A-8 motorway towards Donostia/San Sebastián and then turn off at the exit indicating Gernika-Lumo (BI-635). We will continue along this road, winding through green landscapes and charming villages, until we reach the vibrant town of Lekeitio. From Lekeitio, a short and picturesque journey along the BI-2238 road will take us directly to Ea. The total journey from Bilbao usually takes about an hour to an hour and a quarter, depending always on traffic and the stops we decide to make to admire the landscape.
Once in Ea, the particularity of the village's orography and its historic streets makes access by car to the beach itself practically impossible for parking. The streets are very narrow, many of them pedestrian or one-way, and space is limited. The usual and most advisable thing is to leave the car in the designated parkings at the entrance to the village. They are usually well signposted and, although in high season they can fill up quickly due to the destination's popularity, we always find an option with a bit of luck and patience. From the parking lot, it's a pleasant walk of a few minutes, downhill, to reach the beach, allowing us to enjoy the views of the village and the estuary. Remember that the return, although short, will be uphill, but the reward of the beauty of the beach and the village is well worth the small effort.
By Bus
If you prefer not to drive or simply want to enjoy the scenery without worries, the Bizkaibus company offers regular lines connecting Ea with Lekeitio and Gernika-Lumo. From these strategic points, you can easily connect with other lines that go to Bilbao or other important towns in the province. The A3523 line, for example, connects Lekeitio-Ea-Gernika, being a comfortable and economical option. The bus stops in Ea are usually located near the village entrance, from where the beach is easily accessible on foot, via a short and picturesque walk. It is an excellent alternative for those seeking a more relaxed and ecological experience.
The Sand and Water
Playa de Ea surprises us with its uniqueness in terms of sand and water, differentiating itself from more conventional beaches. It is not the typical fine, golden sand beach one might expect to find elsewhere on the coast. Here, nature shows itself in its most authentic and wild state, offering a different and deeply connected experience with the environment, which we greatly value.
Type of Sand and Ground
The sand of Playa de Ea is of a mixed type. Medium-grain, golden-colored sand predominates, giving it a special shine under the sun, but it blends harmoniously with small gravel and pebbles, especially in areas closer to the water and at the ends of the cove. This combination gives it a more rustic, natural, and virgin appearance, which we find very attractive. When the tide is low, the panorama changes drastically: wide rocky areas and small natural pools are revealed, becoming a paradise for children's exploration, where the little ones enjoy looking for crabs, snails, and small marine creatures that inhabit this micro-ecosystem. It is generally firm and comfortable ground for walking barefoot, although we always recommend bringing water sandals or neoprene booties if you intend to explore the rocky areas without p
