How to Get to Playa de Las Arenas

Getting to Playa de Las Arenas is surprisingly easy, given its privileged location in the heart of Getxo and its excellent connection to the public transport network of Bilbao and its surroundings. We always recommend exploring sustainable transport options, as the car can be an alternative, but often involves parking challenges, especially during the summer months.

By Metro

The most comfortable and efficient way to get to Playa de Las Arenas is by using the Bilbao Metro. Metro Line 1 has a key stop, 'Areeta', which is just a few minutes' walk from the beach. Upon exiting the station, simply follow the signs to the promenade, and within five to ten minutes, you'll be on the sand. This option is ideal for those coming from Bilbao or other municipalities on the Right and Left banks of the estuary, offering a fast, clean, and hassle-free journey. Furthermore, the metro allows you to enjoy the urban landscape without worrying about traffic.

By Bus

Several lines of the Bizkaibus bus network connect Getxo with Bilbao and other nearby municipalities. The stops closest to Playa de Las Arenas are a short distance from the beach. For example, lines A3411 (Bilbao - Getxo via Fadura) and A3413 (Bilbao - Getxo via Algorta) have stops nearby. This is a good alternative if the starting point does not have a direct connection to the metro or if you prefer a means of transport that offers panoramic views during the journey, although the travel time may be a bit longer than by metro.

By Car

If you choose to drive, Playa de Las Arenas is accessible via the BI-711 or the N-637, which connect Getxo with Bilbao and other towns. However, as we mentioned, parking can be a challenge. Around the beach, there are regulated parking zones (OTA) and some paid underground car parks. During the high season, finding a free spot may require patience and a bit of luck. We advise arriving early or considering parking a bit further away and finishing the journey on foot, enjoying a pleasant walk through the municipality of Getxo. Additionally, it should be noted that the streets near the beach are usually quite busy, which can slow down access.

By Bicycle or on Foot

For sports enthusiasts and walkers, Playa de Las Arenas is perfectly accessible by bicycle or on foot, thanks to the extensive and well-maintained promenade that connects it with other areas of Getxo, such as the Puerto Viejo de Algorta, and with the bike lane that runs along the estuary. It's a fantastic way to enjoy the landscape and reach the beach in an active and healthy way, with no emissions and the possibility of stopping for a drink at any of the establishments along the way. We consider it one of the best ways to experience the area.
