How to Get to Playa de Meñakoz

Getting to Playa de Meñakoz is part of the adventure, as its wild nature implies a less direct access than other beaches. We always recommend planning the journey in advance, especially if we are not familiar with the area.

By Car

The most common way to get there is by car. From Sopela or Barrika, we can follow the signs towards the coast. There are some informal parking areas around the beach, but they tend to fill up quickly, especially on good weather days or when the waves are favorable for surfing. It is important to be respectful of the environment and park in designated areas or where we do not block passage or damage vegetation. The final access to the beach is usually on foot, via trails that descend down the cliffs, which already gives us an idea of its character.

By Public Transport

For those who prefer public transport, the most viable option is to use the Bilbao Metro. We can take Line 1 to the Larrabasterra or Sopela stations. From there, the journey to Meñakoz will require a good walk (approximately 30-40 minutes) or taking a local bus that gets us as close as possible, although the nearest stop will still leave us some distance from the beach itself. This option is ideal for those who wish to enjoy a walk in nature before reaching their destination.

On Foot or by Bicycle

Hiking and cycling enthusiasts will find the coastal paths a spectacular way to reach Meñakoz. There are hiking trails that connect the beaches of Sopela and Barrika, offering impressive panoramic views of the Cantabrian Sea. It is an excellent way to warm up before diving into the waves or simply to enjoy the coastal landscape to the fullest.

The Sand and Water

When we set foot on Playa de Meñakoz, the first thing we notice is the particularity of its surface. Let's not expect the typical fine, golden sand found in other tourist beaches. Here, the sand is mixed, combining stretches of coarser sand with an abundant presence of pebbles and rocks. The currents can be strong, so we always advise taking extreme caution, especially if we are not experienced surfers. It is a sea to respect and admire, more than for a relaxed swim. For surfers, this ferocity is precisely its greatest attraction, as it generates waves of considerable size and strength, making it a renowned international surf spot.

Services and Facilities

Our experience tells us that Playa de Meñakoz is a place where nature is the absolute protagonist, and this is directly reflected in the scarcity of services and facilities. If we are looking for a beach equipped with all the comforts, Meñakoz is not the place. And it is precisely that lack of artifice that makes it so special and appreciated by its visitors.

Here we will not find 'chiringuitos' right on the sand, nor showers, nor umbrella and sunbed rentals. The philosophy of Meñakoz is that of a virgin beach, where the only sounds are those of the sea and the wind. However, it is important to note that, due to its popularity among surfers and its relative proximity to Sopela, we do have some basic services that guarantee a safe and pleasant visit.

Lifeguards

Although it is not a crowded beach, during the summer season and at times of high influx (especially when there are good waves), it is common to find lifeguard service. We always greatly appreciate this presence, as the strong currents and powerful waves of Meñakoz make vigilance crucial. It is essential to always respect the instructions of the lifeguards and the flags indicating the state of the sea.
