It is not a beach for those seeking services or crowds, but for those who value tranquility, the landscape, and the feeling of having discovered a small paradise. How to Get to Playa de Ogella

Getting to Playa de Ogella is part of the adventure, and its somewhat more secluded access helps maintain its wild and uncrowded character. It is located in the municipality of Ispaster, very close to Lekeitio, in the province of Bizkaia. The most comfortable way to get there is by car, as public transport does not go directly to the beach.

By Car

From Lekeitio, we will take the BI-2238 road towards Ea. A few kilometers before reaching Ea, we will find a turn-off or an indication (sometimes discreet) towards the beach. It is important to pay attention, as the signage is not always very obvious. Once we take the turn-off, the road becomes narrower and will lead us to an area where we can park. The parking is not a formal car park, but rather a wide verge or a small clearing where vehicles can park informally. It is crucial to be respectful of the environment and not block the way.

From the parking spot, access to the sand is via a path that descends down the cliff. This path, although well-defined, can be somewhat steep and rocky in some sections, so we recommend wearing comfortable and appropriate footwear. The walk is short, but it's worth it for the views it offers as we approach the cove. It is important to consider that, due to this access, the beach is not suitable for people with reduced mobility or baby strollers.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Ogella welcomes us with a beautiful stretch of fine, golden sand, a true pleasure for our feet. It is clean sand, with soft grains, which mixes in some areas with small stones and pebbles, especially at the edges of the cove or when the tide is low. This mix gives the beach an even more natural and authentic touch, reminding us that we are in a wild environment in constant interaction with the sea.

The waters of Ogella are, as is usual on the Biscay coast, cool and invigorating. Their color is an intense greenish-blue, with a transparency that allows us to see the rocky bottom on calm days. Being a cove open to the Cantabrian Sea, the surf can be moderate or strong, depending on sea conditions. This makes it an exciting place for those who enjoy the waves, but always with caution. The presence of rocks on the seabed in some areas adds interest for snorkeling enthusiasts, although we always recommend taking extreme precautions and checking sea conditions before venturing in. The water quality is usually excellent, inviting us to a refreshing swim in this very special place.

Services and Facilities

If there is something that characterizes Playa de Ogella, it is its lack of major infrastructure and services. And, for us, that is precisely part of its charm. We will not find chiringuitos, showers, lifeguards, or umbrella and sunbed rentals here. It is a beach that invites self-sufficiency and respect for the natural environment.

As mentioned in the 'How to Get There' section, there is an informal parking area to leave the car. Beyond that, we must come prepared. Our recommendation is to bring everything we need: drinking water, some food or a picnic, an umbrella if we need shade, towels, and, of course, a bag to collect all our waste and leave no trace of our visit. The lack of formal services underscores the importance of being responsible visitors and caring for this valuable space. For some, this simplicity is a luxury, an opportunity to truly disconnect from the hustle and bustle of modern life and immerse oneself in the purity of nature.

Best Time to Visit

The choice of the best time to visit Playa de Ogella will depend a lot on what we are looking for in our experience. Each season has its particular charm in this Biscay cove.

Summer (June-September)

During the summer months, the beach is ideal for enjoying a swim and sunbathing. Temperatures are more pleasant and daylight hours are longer. However, even in the height of summer, it is rare to find large crowds, making it an excellent alternative to the more crowded beaches. That said, on August weekends there may be more visitors, but it remains a quiet place compared to other beaches in Bizkaia. We recommend going early in the morning or late in the afternoon to enjoy the greatest calm and the most beautiful light.

Spring and Autumn (April-May and September-November)
