How to Get to Playa de Zahora

Getting to Playa de Zahora is relatively straightforward, although we recommend planning the trip, especially during high season to avoid crowds. Our usual route is by car, which gives us the freedom to explore the surroundings easily and without relying on public transport schedules.

By Car

• From Cádiz/Jerez de la Frontera: We take the A-48 motorway towards Algeciras/Tarifa. Upon reaching the area of Vejer de la Frontera, we look for the exit onto the N-340 towards Tarifa. We continue on the N-340 and watch for signs to Zahora or Los Caños de Meca. There are several well-marked turnoffs that lead directly to the beach area. The journey from Cádiz city is approximately one hour.
• From Málaga/Algeciras: We drive on the A-7 and then the N-340 towards Cádiz. We pass Tarifa and continue on the N-340. After leaving Zahara de los Atunes and Barbate behind, we look for signs to Zahora/Los Caños de Meca. It's crucial to pay attention to the signs, as the access points can be somewhat discreet.

Parking

In the vicinity of Playa de Zahora, especially during the summer months, we will find several parking areas. Some are free, although they tend to fill up quickly, and others are paid parking lots managed by private individuals. We recommend arriving early if visiting the beach in high season to secure a good spot. Off-season, parking is usually much easier and free of charge.

Public Transport

Direct public transport to Playa de Zahora is limited. There are bus lines connecting Cádiz and other major towns with Barbate or Vejer de la Frontera. From these points, we might need a taxi or a VTC service to reach the beach directly, as bus stops are usually not right at the beach in Zahora. During the summer, some local lines may enhance their services and get closer to the area, but it's always advisable to check schedules and routes in advance.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Zahora immediately wins us over with its natural characteristics. It's a paradise for the senses, and the quality of its sand and water are undoubtedly two of its greatest attractions.

The Sand

The sand at Zahora is fine and a beautiful golden color. It's incredibly soft to the touch, making it perfect for walking barefoot for kilometers, for lying down and relaxing in the sun, or for children to build their sandcastles with ease. It's not the type of sand that sticks excessively to the skin, which is always appreciated at the end of the day. Its extension, over a kilometer and a half long, guarantees us enough space to not feel crowded, even on busier days.

The Water

As for the water, that of Playa de Zahora is generally crystal clear and of a blue-green hue that irresistibly invites a swim. The entry into the sea is gentle and gradual, without significant drops, making it a very safe beach for children and people with reduced mobility (although it doesn't have specific full accessibility). The waves are usually moderate, ideal for swimming and enjoying calmly, although with the westerly wind there can be days with a bit more swell, which attracts some surfers.

One of the most charming peculiarities of Zahora are the rock formations that emerge at low tide, popularly known as the 'caños de Zahora'. These rocks create small natural saltwater pools, perfect for exploring with a mask and snorkel, discovering the small marine life that hides there, or simply for children to splash around in complete safety. It's a unique experience that adds a touch of adventure and fun to a beach day.
